1st Inning
Leadoff hitter Will Venable started off the game with a single to center. The man is playing on the next level right now. With that hit, Venable is now on a 10 game hitting streak. He’s amazing. Some not so amazing ground outs move Will to 3rd base with two outs before Yonder Alonso steps to the plate. And we all know what happens next, unless you missed the game, then here’s what happened. The Singles Machine struck again! Yonder sends it to the outfield for an RBI single to give the Padres THE LEAD!
PADRES 1-0
The Rockies started the bottom of the inning strong and didn’t let up for a bit. Two singles for Dexter Fowler and D.J. LeMahieu along with a walk to Troy Tulowitzki loaded the bases for Wilin Rosario who then singled in 2 RBI. An RBI single for Todd Helton and then one for Charlie Culberson brought the lead to 3 for Colorado.
Rockies 4-1
2nd Inning
What, you thought the game was over? Padres never say die! Jaff Decker walked to give Nick Hundley a shot at hitting with a runner on base. Nick said “Thanks, Rookie”, and proceeded to smash the ball over the left field wall to pull the Padres within 1 run. Professional hitter Eric Stults singled to center on a hit that nearly took out the pitcher. America’s Finest City’s Sweetheart Will Venable tripled to right field to score Stults and tie the game. Someone else’s sweetheart Alexi Amarista singled to score Venable and give the Padres THE LEAD AGAIN!
PADRES 5-4
3rd Inning
Jedd Gyorko leads off the inning and sends the pitch packing. Country roads, take me home! A huge blast to right and Gyorko has his 2nd homer in 2 games to bring him to 12 this year.
PADRES 6-4
Rockies put a scare into the Padres with a single, a walk, and another single to load the bases with no outs. A pop up by Charlie Blackmon is caught for the 1st out. Stults is able to escape the inning after the pitcher Manship grounded into an inning ending double play.
5th Inning
With Nolan Arenado on 3rd base after a triple, Culberson hit a sacrifice fly to score the run. Following a single by Blackmon, Bud Black had seen enough Stults for the night and brought in Tim Stauffer to record the final out. Stults gave up 11 hits and 3 walks for 5 earned runs without recording a single strikeout. Also, since Eric only pitched 4 and 2/3 innings, he was given an automatic no decision and Stauffer would get the win. That’s baseball.
PADRES 6-5
6th Inning
Ronny Cedeño hit a single just past the shortstop. After a stolen base on a Stauffer strikeout, the man of the month Will Venable singled in Cedeño for his 2nd RBI of the night and 3rd hit of the game.
Stauffer threw a perfect inning along with two strikeouts.PADRES 7-5
7th Inning
Nick Vincent entered the game and threw a perfect inning with 1 strikeout.
8th Inning
Luke Gregerson entered the game for Vincent and recorded 2 quick outs. After giving up a triple to Corey Dickerson, Gregerson was replaced by Huston Street for the 4 out save opportunity. Street got Dexter Fowler to ground out and end the inning.
9th Inning
Huston Street came out to face the Rockies and looked to record his first 4 out save since August 3rd, 2012. The first batter, LeMahieu grounded out for the 1st out. Tulowitzki then popped out to Amarista for out #2. Rosario then came to the plate and sent a high fly ball to the infield for out #3.
PADRES WIN 7-5
It wasn't the best game from Eric Stults, but the Padres offense came out swinging. Their 12 hits scored enough runners to keep the Rockies at bay despite Colorado also putting together 12 hits as well. Tomorrow, the Padres look to take the series with Andrew Cashner taking on Jorge De La Rosa at 12:10pm. Win that game and take this series, Padres!
