Reds 4, Padres 1: Padres Don't Sweep At Petco Park After Loss

Reds turn up offense in 7th inning to keep Padres from sweeping.

Denis Poroy
The sun is out and the game is underway. The Padres are aiming for their first sweep since June 14-16 against the Diamondbacks. Eric Stults leads the charge against the Reds today as he faces Homer Bailey and his 2 no hitters. Psshaw. That’s nothing special anyways. Not like he’s getting one today, right?

1st Inning

Eric Stults had a great 1st inning. Quick. Efficient. Even struck out Chris Heisey. Perfect game is in the works.

Homer Bailey got the Padres out just as fast. Just no strikeouts. Padres obviously won this inning.

2nd Inning

Reds won this inning. Brandon Phillips connected for a home run into the bullpen to give the Reds the lead. Reds got one more hit, but no more runs.

Yonder Alonso, the Singles Machine, got himself on base with a single. Will Venable got rid of the happy feelings with a double play.

Reds 1-0

3rd Inning

Things nearly got out of hand. Derrick Robinson reached base on a bunt. Chris Heisey singled to left. Robinson thought it was his lucky day and tried stealing third base on Rene Rivera. He failed. Rivera throw a rocket to Chase Headley, tag applied, and Robinson is sent on a short walk back to the visitor’s dugout.

Brandon Phillips singled to center and moved Heisey to third, but a Jay Bruce strikeout ends the rally for the Reds.

4th Inning

Chris Denorfia got an infield single on a ball Homer Bailey could not get a handle on. Yonder Alonso raked in his 2nd single of the afternoon. He’s really good at that facet of the game. However, like the last time Yonder singled, Will Venable ended his time on the base paths. This time, Venable’s groundout ended the inning.

5th Inning

TheThinGwynn was likely awakened by an Alexi Amarista single, but fell back asleep after he couldn’t score.

6th Inning

Inning went by fast and nothing happened outside of a Brandon Phillips single.

7th Inning

Not good. Zach Cozart singled to left, then after 2 outs, the Reds began to capitalize. A throwing error by Chase Headley puts runners on the corners for the Reds. Heisey singled to left to score Cozart. Up stepped the big man, Joey Votto, who sent a hard hit double to right field to score 2 RBI. Nick Vincent entered the game in relief of Eric Stults and struck out Phillips to end the inning. Stults pitched 6 and 2/3 innings giving up 4 runs (1 ER) on 6 hits while recording 5 strikeouts and zero walks.

Reds 4-0

8th Inning

Jay Bruce singled to right, but got picked off by Nick Vincent to get him off the bases. Vincent also struck out Cozart and Todd Frazier in the inning.

Alexi Amarista woke up TTG again with another solid single. But, Rene Rivera put him back to bed by grounding into a double play.

9th Inning

Miles Mikolas entered the game to get the Reds out. He had trouble with that. The first batter he faced, Corky Miller, felt the pain of being hit by the pitch. He got Bailey to bunt it foul for strike 3, but walked Robinson. After getting Heisey to fly out, Miles’ day was done. Colt Hynes came in walked Votto to load the bases, but got Brandon Phillips to ground out and end the trouble.

There was a glimmer of hope. Everth Cabrera was safe at first after Joey Votto committed an error on the play. Chase Headley got his first hit of the series with a double to center, broke up the shutout, and ended Homer Bailey’s day. Aroldis Chapman came in and did the exact opposite of what he did in the 1st game of the series. This time, he got Yonder Alonso out and the pinch hitter, Jesus Guzman, went down swinging. Game over.

Reds 4-1

Tough loss, but the Padres still took the series. Tomorrow is an off day, but Padres baseball will return on Friday with the beginning of the series against the New York Yankees. Andrew Cashner will take on CC Sabathia at 7:10 on Friday night.
