07/21 Padres Preview: Game 99 @ St. Louis

The Padres send Eric Stults to the mound, opposite Adam Wainwright, to try to wrap up the series with a victory.

USA TODAY Sports

The Padres go for the series win against the first place Cardinals today, and they'll look to staff ace Eric Stults to help them do so. Stults has been the most reliable pitcher for San Diego, accounting for two out of the Friars' last three wins, and he will try to win his third straight start today in the series finale. He has one career victory in as many tries against the Cards, though he wasn't particularly sharp in that first outing. He gave up three runs in 5 1/3 innings on September 10th and was aided by an offense that was able to put together 11 runs of support.

It would be nice to see that kind of support again from this Padres lineup. They've combined for 11 runs in the first two games of the series. Tonight they'll face Adam Wainwright, who has had a dominant career against San Diego. He is 4-2 with a 1.02 ERA all-time against the Padres, including a one-run 7 1/3-inning performance at Petco Park earlier this season. He's been especially spectacular at home against them, winning all three career starts while posting a 0.38 ERA at Busch Stadium. Today he'll try to at least stay tied with Jordan Zimmermann for most wins in the National League.
