Red Sox 4, Padres 1: At Least The Padres Weren't No-Hit

Tough outing for Robbie Erlin at Fenway keeps losing streak going.

USA TODAY Sports
Here we are, everyone. Fenway Park. The place where Drew Barrymore got hit in the face in Fever Pitch. A place of tradition steeped in mystique. Padres took the field looking to better the result of their last series at Fenway. You remember, don't you? Padres took 2 out of 3 against the Red Sox in 2011 and cost them a playoff spot. Yep. Padres did that. Sorry, Orioles. Anyways, game started so, time for recapping.

1st Inning

Dustin Pedroia thought he could run on Chris Denorfia's arm. Ortiz doubled down the right field line and Pedroia thought he could gallop himself around from 1st and score. Well, according to the umpire, he didn't. But, did Nick Hundley actually tag him? Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe find out yourself. Whatever happened, Padres kept them off the board.

2nd, 3rd, and 4th Inning

Jesus Guzman doubled in the 2nd, Pedro Ciriaco singled in the 3rd, and Kyle Blanks doubled in the 4th. Oh, and over the first 4 innings, John Lackey struck out 5 batters. Not liking that part of this game. Might be time for more hits and less strikeouts. Most likely in the 5th inning.

Boston loads bases the 4th inning. Brandon Snyder hits a bases clearing double. Robbie Erlin's day ends after 92 pitches. 3 and two-third innings. Not the start the Padres needed out of him today. Erlin surrendered 3 ER on 5 hits and 3 walks while only recording 1 strikeout. Tim Stauffer entered the game, gave up 2 hits, but then recorded the third out.

Red Sox 3-0

5th Inning

A Nick Hundley double and an Alexi Amarista single puts Padres at the corners with no outs. Neither them nor any other Padres would touch the plate in the inning. Not the best inning.

6th Inning

Boston scored again. Jose Iglesias singled in a run, then got tagged out on the base path to end the inning.

Red Sox 4-0

7th Inning

The Rally Begins. Jesus Guzman stepped up to the plate and sent a ball off a barrier over the Green Monster. However, the umpires did not want him homering. After some hemming and hawing, they came to the consensus that they did not want to look bad on TV by having to review such an easy call and gave the finger wiggle to let Jesus keep rounding the bases.

Red Sox 4-1

Joe Thatcher enters the game for Stauffer and strikes out 2. The third out was recorded by Kyle Blanks making a running grab and leaving a mark on the wall along the left field foul line.

8th Inning

Dale Thayer came in and struck out 2 batters of his own in this inning.

9th Inning

Nothing.

Red Sox 4-1

Tough loss again for the Padres. Losing streak is extended another game. Tomorrow the Padres will have Edinson Volquez take the mound to face off against Jon Lester. Win the game, Padres. We need it.

Go Padres!
