Cardinals 9, Padres 6: A Bad Way To Start Part 2 of 2013

Jason Marquis has a tough day and the curse of the Green Walls continues.

Dilip Vishwanat
All Star Break is over! Part 2 of the 2013 San Diego Padres season has begun. Jason Marquis is taking on Jake Westbrook and the St. Louis Cardinals. And before I forget, the Padres are playing within the confines of green walls. The type of walls that accounted for 9 straight losses the last time they were on the road. That scares me.

1st Inning

2 singles from Carlos Quentin and Yonder Alonso was not enough to buy a run.

Jason Marquis went out and threw 8 pitches to retire the side. I like that.

2nd Inning

Padres flew out 1-2-3. I don't like that so much.

Cardinals got a few hits, but an inning ending double play ended the inning.

3rd Inning

After a single, a walk, and a sacrifice bunt, the Cardinals were in position to score on a sacrifice fly by Carlos Beltran to open the scoring. And boy howdy, did it open.

Cardinals 1-0

5th Inning

Jake Westbrook, the pitcher, got a double and was doubled home by Matt Carpenter. Another sacrifice bunt by Jon Jay set up another sacrifice fly for Carlos Beltran. This game... Guys don't even need hits anymore to score.

Cardinals 3-0

6th Inning

Cardinals loaded the bases. Jake Westbrook got himself an RBI single that snuck past Everth's D. Jason Marquis' day came to an end. 5 and a third innings pitched. He had zero strikeouts, allowed 3 walks, gave up 8 hits and 6 ER. Where did those other 2 earned runs come from, you ask? Colt Hynes, Marquis' replacement, gave up a single to Matt Carpenter that scored David Freese and Pete Kozma.

Cardinals 6-0

7th Inning

Alexi Amarista and Nick Hundley singled. Mark Kotsay drew a walk. Bases loaded. By this time, every Padre batter but one had a hit. The hitless one? All Star Everth Cabrera. So, what does he do? He gets that hit. A single to left scores Alexi and Nick. Padres still in the game.

Cardinals 6-2

Carlos Beltran gets an actual hit. So does Allen Craig. Yadier Molina gets one too. Except this one actually scores runs. A double gives the Cardinals 2 more runs. A walk and a double play puts Molina at 3rd. A single to left by Kozma scores the 3rd run of the inning. Game is closer to being over.

Cardinals 9-2

8th Inning

Carlos Quentin started off the inning with a walk. 2 straight batters brought 2 straight outs. Then, the 2 out rally began. Will Venable singled. Alexi Amarista also singled to score Carlos Quentin from 2nd base. Cardinals 9-3

9th Inning

Last chance to dance. Jesus Guzman led off the inning with a walk. All Star Everth got a single. Chase Headley came up and bounced one over the green walls for an RBI ground rule double. Carlos Quentin grounded out to score Everth. Chase gets to 3rd base. One out. Yonder Alonso came up and cranked a single to right to score Chase. Former Padre Edward Mujica entered the game for the save opportunity. Jedd Gyorko flew out to right field. 2 outs. Will Venable strikes out to end the game and give Mujica the save.

Cardinals 9-6

Game got better at the end but not good enough. I still put this all on the green walls. There must be something in that color scheme that is terrorizing these Padres. This makes 10 straight losses in stadiums with green walls. Break that trend tomorrow, Padres. Edinson Volquez will take on Lance Lynn at 4:15.
