Padres 4, Rockies 2: Padres Win Another Close Game At Coors Field

Padres rely on good pitching and great hits to beat the Rockies

USA TODAY Sports

1st Inning

Padres were on the big network tonight so they had to come out swinging. Everth Cabrera walked, then stole second. Chase Headley got himself an RBI single. Good start.

PADRES 1-0

3rd Inning

After 2 Rockies hits and runners on the corners, Carlos Gonzalez struck out and the runner on first, Eric Young, was running for second. Now, Gonzalez was the 2nd out, so there was no reason to try picking him off at 2nd. Yasmani Grandal tried. And failed. Unfortunately, the moment the ball left his hands, Dexter Fowler left from 3rd base to score and tie the game.

Tie Game 1-1

4th Inning

Jedd Gyorko started off the inning with a great double. Kyle Blanks hit a home run off the left field foul pole. Yep. The ball is flying off his bat like it was on a trampoline and the Padres retake the lead. Cameron Maybin walked and stole second base. He is running wild all over the field this series. 4 stolen bases already in 3 games. After a Chris Denorfia walk, Everth Cabrera gets the ever incredible bloop double to score Maybin.

PADRES 4-1

Rockies starter Jeff Francis had his night end after the inning. Gave up 4ER on 6 hits and 3 walks. Francis only had 2 strikeouts.

6th Inning

Everth got his 3rd hit of the game, stole his 2nd base of the night and Eric Stults recorded his 4th strikeout of the game. Just thought you should know.

7th Inning

Kyle Blanks continues his hot streak with a double.

In the bottom of the inning, the Rockies added a run. D.J. LeMahieu got a triple and Tyler Colvin grounded out to score the run. After the inning, Eric Stults' night came to an end. 7 innings with 4 strikeouts and no walks. Stults gave up 2 runs (1 ER) on 7 hits.

PADRES 4-2

9th Inning

Chase Headley walks, then an error sends him all the way to 3rd. Carlos Quentin gets walked and replaced by Will Venable. Kyle Blanks walks to load the bases. Unfortunately, when Cameron Maybin is called out at 1st on a groundout, it's the 3rd out. Inning over and zero runs to show for it.

Bottom of the 9th. Pressure situation. Luke Gregerson enters the game to close it out. Herrera singles, then LeMahieu walks. A sac bunt moves them to 2nd and 3rd. 1 out. A line drive to Gyorko records the 2nd out. Luke Gregerson then pulls the rug out from under them and strikes out Dexter Fowler to end the game.

PADRES WIN 4-2

A great win for the Padres. Offense and pitching was pretty good tonight. Win tomorrow to secure the series win and a happy flight, Padres!
