Padres Select OF Hunter Renfroe With 13th Pick in 2013 MLB Draft

San Diego has made its first selection in the 2013 Draft

Mike Stobe

The Padres go with Mississippi State C/RHP/OF Hunter Renfroe who projects as an OF. Here's what MLB.com wrote about him:

Raw and toolsy, Renfroe has developed considerably in his three years at Mississippi State.

While there's still some swing and miss to his game, he's progressed tremendously at the plate. The more consistent of a hitter he can become, the more he can tap into his outstanding raw power. He's a good runner who's even better underway, and he has a cannon for an arm. He's strong and physical and might very well fit the profile for a right fielder at the highest level.

Matt Garrioch of Minorleagueball.com wrote a long profile of the prospect back in January which you can find here. Since then he has stepped up in his junior season and elevated his stock.

Here's a video of ESPN Insider Keith Law talking about the young slugger:

The Padres have taken a number of pitchers with their top picks in recent years along with some speed slap hitters. This time they go with a guy that has some pop in his bat. You have to like the diversification of prospects they get by going with Renfroe now.

Speaking of that power potential, here's some more video:
