Headley won't negotiate during season, too much of a distraction

Denis Poroy

Headley made it abundantly clear to the Padres that he didn't want to negotiate an extension during the season. The Padres made it abundantly clear to Headley and the fanbase that they want to offer him the biggest contract in franchise history. I want to make it abundantly clear that I read this article written on the subject by Corey Brock. To prove it I'm going to quote it.

Chase Headley won't negotiate extension during season | padres.com: News

"It's flattering they feel the way they feel about me. I love playing in San Diego, I love the fans," Headley said. "But I just don't think now is the time to get involved with this. That's it. If there's an opportunity to engage after the season, so be it. "I didn't want to have to deal with the fallout I'm dealing with."

I agree with Chase in this case. Give him what he wants. He wants to wait, let's wait. NOBODY DISTRACT HIM! If Chase waits, the Padres can get a better idea of his worth by watching him in another full season. Personally I want to see if he can play at a high level for more than 2 months. If he continues to play like he did last year, we'll know he's worth the money. Well we already know, but we'll know more so.
