Both the Padres and Cubs are last in their divisions, but have won five of their last seven games coming into today. Both have seen offensive outbursts in recent games. Today's outcome will likely come down to starting pitching.
The Padres go for the series split today in the finale at Wrigley Field. They'll send Eric Stults to the mound to make his sixth start of the season. Stuls is 2-2 with a 5.67 ERA coming into today's game. His last start was his shortest of the year. He went just four innings and struck out four, but gave up five earned runs on four hits and a walk. In four career outings against the Cubs, Stults is 1-3 with a 5.21 ERA. All three losses, however, took place in Chicago.
The Cubs will counter with Travis Wood, who's made four starts and a relief appearance against the Padres prior to today's matchup. He's 0-1 with a 4.21 ERA over those five outings, only one of which was at Wrigley Field. In that start, he was tagged with four homers and six total runs in five innings. Wood has been a solid starter for the Cubs this season, going 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA in his first five starts. He's gone six innings or more in each of his starts this year without allowing more than two runs.
