Padres 2, Mets 1: First win of the year!

The first win of the 2013 was scary and delightful.

Al Bello

Bud Black said on Monday that the team would need some quality pitching to beat the Mets and they got it. Eric Stults pitched his little Padre heart out today. He gave the team 5 innings of scoreless baseball, only allowing 3 hits and 2 walks with 7 strikeouts. Brad Brach and Joe Thatcher combined for an inning of no runs. Dale Thayer and Luke Gregerson combined for 2 innings. Huston Street, well, he came in to save the game in the 9th and gave up a home run on his first pitch.

In the 4th inning Mark Kotsay singled on a pop up to short stop Ruben Tejada. Yonder Alonso singled to center advancing Kotsay to 3B. With runners at the corners rookie phenom Jedd Gyorko drove in his first run with a sharp double to left field. 1-0 Padres. Gyorko is my favorite.

The Padres wouldn't score again until the top of the 8th when Jedd Gyorko drew a wild pitch from Jeurys Familia to score Chris Denorfia from 3rd. 2-0 Padres. The insurance run would prove to be important due to previously mentioned home run given up by Street.

Final: 2-1 Padres

It was a pretty fun game if you enjoy Padres wins or getting ferociously angry at Bud Black for ordering Will Venable to lay down a sac bunt in the first inning.

Go Padres!
