04/30 Padres Preview: Game 26 @ Cubs

Looking at the pitching matchup in game 2 of the four-game series at Wrigley Field.

USA TODAY Sports

Edinson Volquez hasn't been the most consistent or reliable pitcher for the Padres. Tonight's matchup, though, looks to be in his favor. Volquez is 4-0 in six career starts against the Cubs. In the three of those starts that took place at Wrigley Field, he is 2-0. His last start against them, however, was in 2011 before he became a Padre. But after the way his season started, this could be just the team he needs to face to give him a confidence boost and turn his season around. Volquez began 2013 with three straight losses, over which he pitched just 12 1/3 innings while giving up 17 runs. But he is coming off his best outing and first win of the season, a scoreless seven-inning start that saw him scatter five hits and issue no walks while striking out three Milwaukee batters.

Pitching opposite Volquez tonight will be Edwin Jackson. As successful as Volquez has been in his career against the Cubs, Jackson has been equally unsuccessful against the Padres. Tonight in his sixth start against the Padres, Jackson will be seeking his first win. He is also hoping to earn his first win in Chicago. So far in 2013 he's gone 0-3 with a 4.76 ERA. He has had trouble with his command early on in the season and is among the highest in the MLB in walks (15 - 5 more walks on the season than Volquez) and pitches per inning (17.5).
