— San Diego Padres (@Padres) April 27, 2013
In a press conference held Saturday, the Padres and Tijuana Xolos announced that Petco Park will be home to the 2013 San Diego Clasico on July 6th. The Xolos will face Club America in a rematch of the 2012 Clasico, which ended in a 1-1 draw.
The San Diego Clasico formerly took place at Qualcomm Stadium and USD's Torero Stadium, but this will be its first time at Petco Park, which has held two other soccer events in the past. The first, an international match between Mexico and Sweden, drew 30,000 fans to the ballpark-turned-soccer-field in 2005. Last season, the stadium hosted the ChivasClasico between Chivas USA and Chivas de Guadalajara. A crowd of over 23,000 fans came out for the event.
In yesterday's press conference, members of both the Xolos and Padres organizations took time to talk to the media about the Clasico. Joe Corona, Greg Garza, and Fernando Arce represented Club Tijuana while Yonder Alonso, Everth Cabrera, Jesus Guzman, Rick Renteria, Tyler Epp, and Eduardo Ortega were present from the Padres.
