The Padres haven't swept the Giants since 2010. But they have the chance to do so today as they wrap up the series at Petco Park. Jason Marquis takes the mound opposite Ryan Vogelsong in the finale.
Marquis is coming off a rough start against the Brewers. He allowed seven runs in just 4 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. But he hopes to bounce back today against a team he's had success against in the past. Marquis is 6-5 with a 2.94 ERA in 14 career starts against San Francisco. The key will be to try to limit the early runs. Of 15 runs given up this season, 7 have come in the first inning for Marquis.
Vogelsong is 3-3 all-time against San Diego, but went 3-1 with 2.05 ERA against them in 2012. In his most recent start, he allowed four runs on seven hits in seven innings. He has struggled a lot with the long ball this year. He's given up four home runs, averaging a homer per six innings, in his first four starts.
After last night's game, both the Padres and Giants will be looking to keep the defense on lock. Each team committed two errors, though it was the Giants who suffered the most as five of the Padres' eight runs were unearned, including the game-winner in the 12th inning.
