Whatever the reason, Andrew Cashner is finally getting around to what he was getting prepped for last season, a spot in the starting rotation. Cashner will be taking Clayton Richard's place tonight as the Padres face the Giants.
Cashner was sent to the minors late last season to work on building his starting pitcher endurance. He started three games for AA San Antonio and three games for AAA Tucson, 23 1/3 innings across the six games.
Last year, over 5 game starts, Cashner logged 18.2 innings total. His longest appearance came at Houston, where he pitched 6 1/3 innings, gave up 2 earned runs, struck out 9 and got the win. In his following start he went 5 strong against Arizona and secured the win.
A six inning appearance may be asking for much on an emergency start, but the starting rotation is absolutely where the Padres want him to be, and if you'll remember, his offseason injury did not sit well with the front office. This may be an important opportunity for everybody's favorite 100+mph hurler.
Went a full 175 words before mentioning 100mph. That is a record.
