In a tough loss for the Padres, the Giants won in a walkoff tonight. The good news is that Edinson Volquez finally put up a quality start, allowing two runs on eight hits and three walks in spite of a brutally small strike zone. Much of the credit for that start goes to Everth Cabrera, who turned a gorgeous double play in the bottom of the sixth with no outs and runners on first and second.
1st Inning
The Padres and Giants both scored on sacrifice flies. The Padres look cooler doing it with a leadoff double from Chris Denorfia.
1-1
3rd Inning
Buster Posey walked and then scored on a Hunter Pence double.
2-1 Giants
6th Inning
Chase Headley formally announced his return to the lineup with a gorgeous home run that just cleared the left center wall.
2-2
7th Inning
Dale Thayer and his beard sent the Giants down in order.
2-2
9th Inning
Gregor Blanco led off with a single. Andres Torres tried to bunt him to second, but some great defense by Luke Gregerson caught Blanco at second. Sadly, the out would prove meaningless as Torres stole second and then scored on an Angel Pagan double.
Final: 3-2 Giants
The Padres are back tomorrow, with Clayton Richard taking on a struggling Tim Lincecum at 6:05 PM.
