Mets 11, Padres 2: Worst opener ever

Oof. It was the worst Opening Day loss in Padres history.

USA TODAY Sports

1st Inning

If you bet that Chris Denorfia would have the first hit of the season on a ground ball to left fielder Lucas Duda, then you won. Everth Cabrera followed with a sacrifice bunt to 1B to advance Denorfia to second. Yonder Alonso grounded softly to the pitcher. Carlos Quentin drew a walk. With runners on the corners, rookie phenom Jedd Gyorko had a chance to break the game wide open but instead grounded out.

If you placed a bet that Padres 3B Cody Ransom would commit the first fielding error of the season on a ball hit by David Wright, you also won.

0-0

2nd Inning

In the bottom of the 2nd inning the Mets' John Buck drew a walk. Ruben Tejada doubled on a line drive to Carlos Quentin in left field. Buck scored and Tejada went to third on the throw. Ever observant Pitcher Jon Niese learned the weak spot in the Padres defense and lined a single to Quentin scoring Tejada.

2-0 Mets

3rd Inning

You could just tell the Padres were determined to score in the 3rd inning. Their plan worked flawlessly. First they'd have Denorfia draw a walk, let Cabrera get hit by a pitch, have Yonder Alonso fly out for no reason and then finally have Quentin single to center for the first RBI of the season.

2-1 Mets

In the bottom of 3rd the Mets struck again. Wright singled and stole second. Marlon Byrd singled to Quentin, of all people, to drive in Wright. Jon Buck singled on a line drive to Maybin scoring Byrd.

4-1 Mets

4th inning

In the 4th Collin Cowgill hit a double to Quentin, of all people. That triggered a butt load of substitutions. Anthony Bass entered the game in relief of Edinson Volquez who had control issues all day. Jedd Gyorko was moved from 2B to 3B. Bass immediately gave up a single that scored Cowgill, then threw a wild pitch. Wright grounded out but scored Cowgill. Byrd singled, to of all people, Carlos Quentin to score Daniel Murphy.

7-1 Mets

6th Inning

Yonder Alonso hit the Padres first home run of the year to deep right field. Jedd Gyorko recorded his first Major League hit., a double. Yay.

7-2 Mets

7th Innng

This is where things got really ugly. Brad Brach came in to replace Bass. Brach walked Duda. Buck singled to Quentin, of all people. Tejada also singled to load the bases. Collin Cowgill hit a grand slam. Boo.
