Our Padres travel to Scottsdale today to take on San Francisco in what will be an important game concerning our rotation. Andrew Cashner will make the start and try to make his case for the final spot in the rotation, competing for the job against Tyson Ross. Against the Giants today he will throw four or five innings (60-70 pitches) and continue to build his stamina should he win the starting job and begin his 2013 season on the mound on April 6th. Anthony Bass is scheduled for two innings in relief of Cashner, followed by an inning each from Joe Thatcher, Tommy Layne, and Luke Gregerson.
Also making starts in today's matchup are Carlos Quentin and Logan Forsythe, who are both coming off injuries and trying to get back in the swing of things as the regular season draws nearer. Quentin, who has been nursing a sore right knee, has played in minor league games recently but today will get his first official Cactus League start (his only prior start was in a game that was called due to rain). Forsythe's sore right foot has kept him on the sidelines for a portion of his Spring, but he's been coming along nicely and expects to be ready for Opening Day. In a minor league game on Sunday, he collected three hits including a home run and was able to play defense for three innings. Forsythe will likely begin the season with the starting job at third base while Chase Headley is out.
