For Freddy Garcia, who the Padres signed to add pitching depth in late January, I think John Lennon sang it best, "the dream is over". It's not that General Manager Josh Byrnes and the Padres organization don't believe in 15th chances. It's just that they can't let a player throw like sh_t in Spring Training for his entire time in camp and keep him on the team. As fans of course we'd be fine with it, but it would look bad to those outside the Padres system. It would draw to much attention to a team purposely trying to lose games while becoming wealthy off profit sharing. Sure they could try and go with the excuse that Spring Training statistics are meaningless, or try and blame the dry desert air, but not this time. The dream is over.
The #Padres have released 36 y/o pitcher Freddy Garcia. Had a 8.71 ERA in 20 2/3 innings this spring. More soon at Padres.com.
