Casey Kelly has pitched in 3 games so far this Spring. In each one it was in a relief appearance after a Freddy Garcia start. It went mostly unnoticed yesterday, however, when Garcia started and Kelly did not enter the game. Then today a vague Peter Gammons tweet came out that got some of the twitter folk worrying.
It isn't fair if Casey Kelly really needs TJ surgery
— Peter Gammons (@pgammo) March 13, 2013
It was known that Peter Gammons was in Padres camp, so it easily could be interpreted that he knew something was wrong with Kelly's arm. Something that could result in Tommy John surgery. Later, Corey Brock confirmed these suspicions:
Confirmed #Padres prospect RHP Casey Kelly will have tests done on a sore right elbow. Kelly hasn't pitched since 3/7.

This kind of news is nothing new to Padres fans. Cory Luebke, Joe Wieland, Rymer Liriano all have had Tommy John surgery in recent memory. In addition to that Tim Stauffer, Anthony Bass and Robbie Erlin had significant arm injuries last season. Casey Kelly was also sidelined for a while with arm troubles in 2012.
Additional Info:
#Padres Casey Kelly had his elbow examined yesterday in SD. "Hopefully we will get lucky this time," GM Josh Byrnes said.
