AFL Open Thread: 10/09 Javelinas vs. Saguaros

Day 2 of AFL is underway. Tommy Medica is in the starting lineup for the Javs.

The Javelinas dropped the AFL opener yesterday in Surprise. Cory Spangenberg went 1-for-5 with a double and a run scored while Austin Hedges went 2-for-4. Unfortunately, Adys Portillo didn't have a great day on the mound when he came in to pitch the 6th inning. After loading the bases with two outs, he went behind 3-1 in the count to Saguaros hitter Mitch Haniger and then gave up a grand slam to the left fielder to put Surprise up 7-3. The Javs got two more runs in the 8th inning to close the gap and then Hedged led off the 9th with a single, but the run never came home and the Saguaros held on for the 7-6 victory.

Today the Javs host the Saguaros in Peoria. Tommy Medica, batting in the 3-spot and playing first base, is the lone Padres representative in the starting lineup today. The game is already underway, scoreless in the 1st, and you can follow along with Gameday.
