AFL Open Thread: 10/08 Javelinas @ Saguaros

Arizona Fall League opens play as the Peoria Javelinas take on the Surprise Saguaros.

USA TODAY Sports

Several Padres prospects will be playing in the Arizona Fall League this offseason as members of the Peoria Javelinas, along with players from the Astros, Royals, Phillies, and Mariners organizations. Today marks the beginning of AFL play for the 2013 season and the Javelinas will be facing the Surprise Saguaros in the opener this afternoon.

Making up the Padres contingent for the Javs are pitchers Johnny Barbato, Dennis O`Grady, Adys Portillo, and Keyvius Sampson as well as catcher Austin Hedges and infielders Tommy Medica and Cory Spangenberg. Of those players, Spangenberg is the only one returning from the 2012 team which, if you recall, took home the championship. He is leading off for the Javs today and playing second base while Hedges bats 8th and gets the start behind the plate.

You can follow the AFL opener between Peoria and Surprise, which has JUST gotten underway, on Gameday. And make sure to follow @MLBazFallLeague on Twitter for updates.
