Our Padres' win streak against Arizona is over now, but they can still take the series in the rubber match today. Andrew Werner will get the call, making his fourth major league start. His first three starts have been promising. He's given up two runs and gone six innings in each while posting a 3.00 ERA and keeping hitters to a .203 average. His most recent outing was a tough-luck loss to the Dodgers in which he struck out eight batters for a career-high.
Arizona will counter with their own rookie, Patrick Corbin, who has gone his last three starts without collecting a win. Against the Giants in his last start, he surrendered four runs in the first inning and went on to take the loss. He has pitched twice against San Diego this season, once in relief and once as a starter. He lost the start, giving up four runs on nine hits in four innings while getting zero run support from his offense.
But the Diamondbacks offense has been playing better recently. Over their last five games, they've hit .320 and combined for 35 runs. Padres offense fell short last night, but has been fantastic against Arizona pitching in the last three series, outscoring the Snakes 53-23 over the last eight contests between the two teams. With just four games separating our Friars from the Dbacks, there's a lot at stake in today's series finale.
