Brian Giles is probably better known in San Diego for his naked "Padres hugs" than anything else. It's a shame because he was a pretty good hitter for a time. When his teammates tired of his stale children's jokes he had no choice but to push through the boundaries of decency to get the attention that he craved.
Greg Maddux found it hilarious. Listen to that high pitched, staccato laugh.
"I guess it's funnier when he tells the joke without wearing any clothes," Maddux said.
Maddux fights off the hug, but pats Giles on the shoulder for a job well done. John Smoltz chooses not to fight and lets the hug happen. Tom Glavine remains perfectly still in his successful effort to avoid physical contact. All of them are laughing, even to the point of tears.
After Giles leaves, Maddux points to Glavine and Smoltz saying to his interviewer "these guys are bad teammates, I never got a naked hug from them."
