Our Padres couldn't get much going at the plate last night. Chase Headley's homer in the fourth inning provided the only run for starter Casey Kelly, who struggled on the mound as well. But the 1-0 lead only lasted for half an inning. Kelly allowed a run in the bottom of the 4th with a walk followed by back-to-back singles. The Giants took the lead in the 5th, again on a walk and back-to-back singles, before Kelly could record the first out of the inning.
Tommy Layne then came in to relieve Kelly and end the inning. In the 6th, our Padres had a chance to tie the game again. With Headley on first base, Yasmani Grandal hit a long double to the left field corner. Headley ran past second and Glenn Hoffman waved him around third, but Brandon Crawford threw him out easily at home to end the inning.
After giving up a two-out triple to Angel Pagan in the 6th, Bud Black called on Cory Burns to replace Layne. He immediately gave up a single to score Pagan from third. Pablo Sandoval followed with a home run to right to add two more runs.
Grandal took a foul tip to his mask in the top of the 7th and had to leave the game, giving Ali Solis his second major league appearance. Grandal was evaluated after the game and given the green light for Saturday, but he said that he would be wearing a hockey-style catcher's mask.
The Giants never gave up their 5-1 lead after the 6th inning. Overall a poor offensive showing from our boys, who could not get anything going against Ryan Vogelsong, who ended his night after six innings and a run on five hits. But there were a few Padres highlights from last night. Everth Cabrera stole his 34th base of the season. Also, Cameron Maybin made a couple of awesome catches in center, such as the one below, to prevent even more damage from the Giants offense.
