Our Chase Field win streak was snapped last night as our Padres dropped a close one out in the desert. Tonight our boys will get a chance to even up the series as Edinson Volquez and Trevor Cahill battle it out on the mound.
Volquez is 3-1 over his last four starts. He wasn't exactly sharp in his latest win, however. He gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits in 5 1/3 innings. He did strike out six in that outing, but also walked six. He has made three starts against Arizona this season, going 1-0 and giving up two runs each time. He's pitched a total of 20 innings against the Diamondbacks and struck out 20 batters while walking 10.
His opponent, Trevor Cahill, has gone 1-2 in four starts against San Diego this season. He had maybe his worst start of the season on August 26th when our Padres traveled to Chase Field. He gave up four runs on eight hits and lasted only 3 2/3 innings, his shortest outing of the year. Cahill has won both of his last two starts, however. Most recently, he kept the second-place Dodgers to two runs on four hits in seven innings. Prior to that, he limited the first-place Giants to two runs on two hits in 6 1/3 innings. Those two wins put Cahill at 11-11 on the season and looking to go above .500 with a win against our Friars tonight.
