In a fitting end to what has been a phenomenal month, our Padres took the first game of the series against the Rockies last night. Clayton Richard earned his 12th win of the year, and fourth win in his last five starts. He cruised through the first five innings, allowing only one run to the Rockies on an RBI groundout by Jordan Pacheco.
Meanhwhile, his offense gave him four runs of support, three off starting pitcher Alex White and one off reliever Josh Roenicke. Carlos Quentin homered to lead off the 2nd. Yasmani Grandal followed that up with a walk and later came home on a single by Logan Forsythe. In the 3rd, Will Venable tripled and scored on an RBI groundout by Chase Headley. Headley and Quentin hit back-to-back doubles in the 5th to give San Diego a 4-1 advantage.
But the Rockies narrowed the gap in the sixth, when Richard gave up home runs to Pacheco and Wilin Rosario to make it a one-run game. The score remained 4-3 Padres until the 8th inning, when Cameron Maybin scored a very Padres-esque run that ultimately decided the game. Maybin hit a grounder, which deflected off the glove of Josh Rutledge, allowing him to to round first base and slide safely into second. Later in the inning, with Chris Denorfia at the plate, Maybin went off on an attempt to steal third. But Denorfia hit an infield single to allow the speedy Maybin to come home.
That run proved critical, as Luke Gregerson gave up a solo shot to Andrew Brown to lead off the 9th inning before recording the final three outs and locking up his third save of the season. Our Padres finished the month with an 18-10 record, good for third best in the league in August. They've now won 10 of the last 11 games and continue to ride their momentum going into September.
