Today, prospect guru John Sickels released a review of the players he listed as top prospects in the Padres farm system. The grades aren't updated, so what you see listed is the grade from before the season started, but he makes some comments about each of the team's top "20" preseason prospects (it's actually 27 because the Padres are awesome like that). Eight of the players on list actually played for the Padres this season: Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, Anthony Bass, Joe Wieland, Brad Brach, Brad Boxberger, Miles Mikolas and Blake Tekotte. James Darnell is another name on the list that had a cup of coffee with the big league team.
By my count, 11 of the 27 are performing up to or exceeding expectations. Six of the remaining 16 are sort of treading water and in a wait-and-see mode, but nothing to really be concerned about yet. Four of the still remaining 10 can best be described as disappointing, but all have birth dates in the 1990s so there's time. The final 6 had their seasons hampered by injuries. If this has you intrigued be sure to head over to Minorleagueball.com and check the review out. They do good work over there and are part of the SBNation network.
