Our Padres are still undefeated at Chase Field this season. Arizona starter Patrick Corbin only lasted four innings last night before giving the ball over to their bullpen. He ended his night credited with four runs and nine hits, taking his first loss in five starts since being recalled from Triple-A. His offense was useless last night also, only managing to put one runner in scoring position all night.
Eric Stults put up a fantastic start, not only on the mound, but at the plate as well. He dominated the Diamondbacks for seven innings, throwing 103 pitches. He kept them to three hits and one walk while striking out four. Our bullpen did their part too. Nick Vincent allowed a two-out single in the 8th, but it amounted to nothing. Then Tommy Layne closed out the game by retiring the Dbacks in order in the 9th.
Our offense, led by Stults last night, scored five runs off Arizona pitching. In the 2nd inning, the "Y's Guys" Yasmani Grandal and Yonder Alonso hit back-to-back singles. Everth Cabrera drew a 2-out walk to load the bases. Eric Stults then hit a single, driving in two runs. Cabrera got himself out at 3rd on that same play to end the inning, but our Padres were up 2-0.
Chris Denorfia homered to lead off the 3rd inning. In the 4th, Eric Stults brought another run home with an RBI double to score Cameron Maybin, who had doubled himself earlier in the inning. Cabrera also doubled to lead off the 7th. He reached 3rd on a sac fly by Stults then came home on a sac fly by Denorfia.
Stults' 3 RBI were a career high. He only had four total in his career going into last night's game. The victory extended our win streak to five games and improved our season series record against Arizona to 6-4.
