Does Quentin Determine Headley's Fate?

The San Diego Padres are drawing significant interest in third baseman Chase Headley, but one rival executive tells Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports that the club may not be able to move him without knowing what they will do with outfielder Carlos Quentin:

The Padres are drawing significant interest in third baseman Chase Headley, but one rival executive asks: How could the team trade Headley without knowing the future of left fielder Carlos Quentin?

Both players, Headley and Quentin, have had their names floated in trade rumors this season. Rosenthal believes San Diego could trade both, but that could leave their 2013 offense in even worse shape than they are now.

Rosenthal believes the Padres could sign Quentin and trade Headley, the player he believes will bring the greatest return of anyone on San Diego’s roster.

Headley has hit at a clip of .272/.371/.418 with eight home runs, 18 doubles and 38 RBIs this season. The 28-year-old is a career .269/.347/.395 hitter and won’t reach free agency until after the 2014 season.
