Padres swept and Bass injured.

I'll say this, when I was listening to the game in the first 3 innings everything was going swimmingly. I come back to gloat about a Padres victory and find nothing but disappointment. The Padres were swept. Let me see what I can piece together from watching "highlights" and reading the game recap.

Anthony Bass Injured

Duhb-uhl-yoo Tee Ef? In the second inning Anthony Bass was driving in runs and stealing bases. In the 5th inning he sustains an injury that has yet to be diagnosed. The team is hoping it's just inflammation to his throwing shoulder but they won't know for a few days. Bass doesn't think he'll need to go on the Disabled List, but at this point that's probably just wishful thinking. The Padres roster is riddled with injuries. Let's look:

Venable vs. Darvish

In Spring Training when these two first met. Will Venable crushed a double off of a 2-2 pitch. Darvish wasn't impressed and suggested that the hit was aided by the wind. I figured it was just a Japanese idiom.

"With the dry air in Arizona and the wind blowing out, it carried the ball," Darvish said through an interpreter. "It didn't seem like a ball that was hit that squarely."

Venable scoffed:

"I think the wind saved it from being a home run," Venable said. "I also heard that he didn't think I hit it squarely. If that's the case, I don't think anyone has squared off a ball off of him. That's as well as I could hit a ball, to be honest. I don't know if something was lost in translation there.

"I would have liked to hear a little more humility from the guy. To each his own. He's a confident guy. Of course I didn't square up a ball because he's Yu Darvish."

Today Darvish had the last laugh going 8 innings and keeping Venable hitless while striking him out twice. At the plate Darvish recorded his first hit by slapping a ball to Will Venable in right field. Advantage Darvish.

Dick Enberg: "Hubba-Hubba"

In the 8th inning Padres Ball Girl Lisa stretched to catch a line drive that was headed into the seats. It was a decent catch but really nothing too spectacular. Enberg verbally jizzed. He thought she deserved the play of the game and then when he got a chance to leer at her more closely he creepily added "Hubba-Hubba". This is easily the 5th time I've heard Enberg say "Hubba-Hubba" during a broadcast. It sends shivers down my spine each time.
