It's only the second game of the season, so you know what I'll chalk this up to... I'll chalk this up to the Padres being mostly young, without their veteran leadership in Mark Kotsay and Carlos Quentin, kinda believing a little bit of the hype of Spring Training and then going out and trying to do too much too soon.
Like... That's the best explanation, right?
The fielding was terrible today. The umpires blew another call when Dee Gordon obviously... obviously... stole second base in the 5th only to be called out, mercifully by the kindhearted second base umpire. There were all kinds of terrible plays in the field (save for a pretty good diving catch by Will Venable, who's my favorite, which he followed up with a nice double, only to be stranded).
Chad Billingsly, from Defiance, OH, went 8 and a third of an inning, throwing 108 pitches and only allowing 3 hits and a base on balls.
Cory Luebke would do well to forget that he ever went 4 2/3 innings, giving up 9 hits, 6 runs (5 earned) and a base on balls. That 9.64 ERA isn't for long.
When the Padres were committing all those errors and generally fielding the ball poorly, did anybody else get that tingly feeling in their crotch like they just saw something that was either really gross or really embarrassing? I seriously changed the channel for a little bit. Not out of disgust, but out of that embarrassed feeling. Like when you're watching Saved By The Bell and Screech does something so stupid and you can't help but NOT watch because it reminds you of the most embarrassing pathetic thing you ever did in your own life.
Did that happen to anybody else? Just me and Bud Black? OK.
In other news, Andrew Cashner made an appearance, but nothing caught fire. Andrew Cashner throws the ball like 100 mph. That's a fact.
In my 2012 Game Rankings, this takes over the spot as the worst game of the season. Current Rankings:
- April 5th, 2012 - Padres 3, Dodgers 5 - Opening Day
- April 6th, 2012 - Padres 0, Dodgers 6 - Tony Gwynn Opening Day
Remember people. The baseball season is a marathon and just like a marathon, you're allowed to take a nervous poop after the race starts if it'll get the bowels clear for the next 26.2 miles.
