Here's a couple more tables I made for the Gaslamp Ballmanac series. I've been sitting on them for a little while trying to figure out if there's any conclusions I can draw from them.
We can see here that the Padres come out of the box slow, like Yonder Alonso on his way to first (undoubtedly en route to second). That is unless the season starts in March. April on average has never been a real good month for the team.
It's interesting to note that Magical May gets all the attention here at Gaslamp Ball, but August has the team's highest winning percentage (if you throw out March and October for their small sample sizes). Both May and August seem to be bounce back months and show sharp contrasts of poorly played Aprils and Julys.
Winning % by Month
Month | Wins | Games | Winning % | Average Attendance |
Apr | 440 | 978 | 44.99% | 25,292 |
Jul | 523 | 1155 | 45.28% | 24,830 |
Sep | 525 | 1144 | 45.89% | 20,942 |
Jun | 551 | 1189 | 46.34% | 24,022 |
May | 575 | 1224 | 46.98% | 21,635 |
Aug | 584 | 1222 | 47.79% | 22,297 |
Oct | 44 | 88 | 50% | 22,734 |
Mar | 3 | 4 | 75% | 51,905 |
The 31st of the month is a good day for the Padres. This date benefits from approximately 100 fewer games and the 71% winning percentage of May 31st.
The last thing I noticed was that the Padres don't typically do well on the 14th-15th or the 26th-27th days of month. They should beg the league to give them off-days around that time.
Let me know if you see anything else interesting that I missed.
