SBN Awards: Rookie Of The Year

Early on in the season, I would get frantic IMs from jbox, saying things like, "Did you see Bryce Harper's ridiculous double?" and "Look at the cannon on this kid! Look at it!" and "I'm gonna get my hair cut like Bryce Harper #RoY", with the hashtag and everything.

So, even though we agreed to vote according to WAR for the SBN Rookie of the Year award, I imagine that it must've been a bit of a jbox delight for Bryce Harper to pull this mofo out at the last minute and dominate the WAR (and also the vote). The Padres get some recognition with Yasmani Grandal scoring a third place vote (from somebody other than us) and WAR betrayed us a little bit as Norichika Aoki slipped behind Todd Frazier of the Reds.

The one guy that everybody was a little confused about was Yonder Alonso. Did he qualify as a rookie? Did he not? Does WAR not correctly take into account players who are able to hit doubles at will? In the end it probably didn't matter and, all things considered, it was probably for the best that Yasmani didn't get called up earlier and mash the way he did. It might've stung a bit too much to have our most recent Rookie of the Year go the way of our most recent MVP.
