The Padres, 19.5 games behind the Diamondbacks with 19 games left in the season, are officially mathematically eliminated from postseason play. I don't think it's a surprise to anyone and most fans are used to it by now, but it's still disheartening to know you'll have to wait seven more months for another chance at playoff. However, there ARE still 19 games left, and the Padres won't just lay down and let the rest of the season go to waste. For those who still love baseball and don't want to wallow in a lost season, these next few weeks should still be entertaining as we continue to watch a young Padres team fight and scrap and RUIN EVERYTHING.
Today is the first of seven times we will face Arizona in our next 11 games. The first place Dbacks will be looking to get some easy wins out of us to distance themselves even more from the Giants and to secure their spot in the playoffs. They have won 12 of their last 14 games and are seven games up on the second place Giants. They have three hitters with 7+ game hitting streaks on the line coming into tonight's game and their ace, Ian Kennedy, will be taking the mound in tonight's opener. Kennedy is 2-0 against the Padres this year, posting a 2.08 ERA, .200 BAA, 16 K's, and only allowing one walk.
San Diego will counter with Cory Luebke, who hasn't done so well against Arizona this year. He is 2-0 with a 6.57 ERA in four games (two starts). His last time pitching in Arizona, he gave up five earned runs in 6 1/3 innings for the loss. But our offense will do their best to back him up with some runs and make Arizona work.
"The bottom line is we've got to keep fighting. We've got to make these teams beat us. I still think we can do something special."
-Cameron Maybin
I think what Cam means is we can still RUIN EVERYTHING.
GO FRIARS!! KEEP THE FAITH!!
