Game Thread: 7/1 Padres @ Mariners

After completing the sweep of the Royals on Wednesday and an off day on Thursday, our Padres look to keep the ball rolling as they head into their last stretch of games before the All Star Break. This ten-game West coast road trip will begin tonight in Seattle against our hated interleague rivals, the Mariners.

Seattle will look to starter Jason Vargas to turn their luck around. They come into tonight's game having lost three in a row, but hope to end that losing streak and build on their success against San Diego this season. Vargas' last start began roughly, as he gave up three runs on four hits in his first inning of work. He will try not to repeat that tonight against our Padres, who have been taking better advantage of scoring opportunities lately. Behind the plate will be former Padre Josh Bard, who was brought up from AAA when starting catcher Miguel Olivo hurt his hamstring, and then backup Chris Gimenez strained his oblique when he went in as a replacement on Tuesday night against the Braves.

We're in the middle of our best stretch of baseball this season, having won four consecutive and seven of the last eight games. Additionally, we are coming off our first sweep and first winning homestand of the year. It's important that we do well in this series to set the tone for the rest of the road trip and to show the rest of the NL West that we should not be overlooked. Super MWG!

GO FRIARS!! KEEP THE FAITH!!

P.S. Tonight is throwback night at Safeco Field so the Mariners will be wearing their 1984 unis while our Padres rock the brown and yellow. Sir Mix-A-Lot will throw out the first pitch. No joke.
