Our Padres just finished up a great series against the Astros, taking 3 out of 4. That's exactly what we needed to start off this homestand. We've won three straight and eight out of the last 11. Now let's take that momentum into this Rockies series.
There is no doubt that our Padres have been improving on offense lately. We are only 6 1/2 games behind the Giants in first place. We took 2 of 3 against the Rockies in May at Coors Field, where we scored 24 runs in the series.
The Rockies scored 21 runs themselves in that series, but have been quiet offensively ever since. Tonight they will try to avoid their 13th loss in 17 games. They have scored three or fewer runs in 11 of their last 12 games.
Tonight, Clayton Richard, who is 2-6 with a 4.52 ERA, will make his first start against the Rockies this season. He faced them six times in 2010, going 1-2 with a 6.15 ERA (1-0 with a 3.00 ERA at home). Right-hander Clayton Mortensen, who is 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA, will pitch for the Rockies. This will be his first career start against the Padres. He is coming off an 8-2 loss to the Dodgers, in which he allowed a season-high five runs on five hits and four walks over four innings.
Padres need to take advantage of the Rockies' current offensive slump. With our offense improving, this series will be key in moving up in the division standings and, at only one game back from the Rockies, possibly getting out of the NL West Cellar.
GO FRIARS!! KEEP THE FAITH!!
