A bad first inning by Clayton Richard was just enough to doom our Padres to a loss yesterday as they opened up their series at Target Field. Two errors, a wild pitch, and a passed ball, followed by a Danny Valencia three-run homer gave the Twins a five-run lead in the first inning. We were able to chip away at that lead throughout the game, highlighted by a Ryan Ludwick home run, but stopped one run short of the tie and took a 5-6 loss.
Brad Hawpe will hit in the DH spot today and Ryan Ludwick will return to left field after a day off yesterday. We will send Tim Stauffer to the hill to hopefully continue his recent hot streak. Minnesota right-hander Scott Baker also has some momentum coming into this game. He pitched a complete game in his last outing, striking out seven and allowing just one run on five hits.
Yesterday's game showed us that being down early doesn't necessarily mean we are out of the game. Our boys were able to battle back on both offense and defense, only allowing one Minnesota run to score after the disastrous first inning. Hopefully they won't have to chip away at another lead like that today, but yesterday's performance was a good sign that they should not be counted out in any situation.
GO FRIARS!! KEEP THE FAITH!!
