We did it, guys! We made it through May! And we ended it with a win, locking up the series in Atlanta. Today, we look to start June with a win and a sweep of the Braves. If successful, this will be our first three-game sweep in Atlanta since 1989.
Yesterday our bats came to life in a 5-4 victory. Ryan Ludwick and Chris Denorfia combined for seven of the team's 14 hits, while a great performance on the mound gave Mat Latos his second win in a row (third of the season). Tied at two going into the seventh inning, the Padres launched an offensive surge that secured the win. They scored three runs on a walk, stolen base, and four hits. The Braves answered that inning with a run off Luke Gregerson, and rallied in the ninth for another run off closer Heath Bell before falling short and giving the Padres their fourth win in a row.
Southpaw Clayton Richard takes the mound today, also hoping to secure his third win of the season. His last outing, allowing just one run on three hits in seven innings, resulted in a no-decision and a Padres loss. The Braves' Tommy Hanson will try to come back from two bad outings in a row, in which he gave up a total of seven runs on nine hits and seven walks in 10 2/3 innings of work.
We hope to continue our recent offensive success, which has relied on small ball to score runs. The seventh inning of last night's game was an example of how the Padres need to be playing with a team that has no real power hitter: getting runners on base and in a position to score with base hits rather than home runs.
Let's end this road trip with a win and a happy plane ride home! GO FRIARS!! KEEP THE FAITH!!
