On the day we lose Heath Bell, we gain Omar Minaya. It's the Circle of Life as a Padres Fan.
You'll remember Omar Minaya as the former GM of the Mets and the Expos. Minaya had the wonderful job of running the Expos while they were owned by 29 other baseball owners looking to dismantle the team and move it to Washington, DC. Given no budget and instructions to burn the sh_t to the ground, he still managed to take the Expos to second place and cobble together two winning seasons over three years. He also spent time as the Mets GM, notably signing Pedro Martinez and Carlos Beltran. His previous stint with the Mets had him assisting Steve Phillips, who likes to pretend that he's a GM for TV.
No definite word yet on what Minaya's job will be for the Padres, though, being an expert on scouting and Latin America, I full expect him to save the Padres billions of dollars by correctly being able to tell the difference between a 25 year old Dominican and a 12 year old Dominican.
