Jorge Cantu to sign with the Padres

Ken Rosenthal broke the news yesterday that Jorge Cantu will sign a one year deal with the Padres.  Jed Hoyer continues the trend of signing players who were really good in 2008.  I figure if you sign enough of these guys and then you get your hands on a time machine... the Padres will have an awesome 2008 season OR you could hope that these players bounce back and have a good 2011.  Either way.

  • Padres said to be adding versatile Cantu to offense - SignOnSanDiego.com
Cantu has played every infield position, although the bulk of his career has been split between first and second. He could be used in a platoon with the left-handed hitting Brad Hawpe at first while also spelling Orlando Hudson at second and Chase Headley at third.

That was quite a dropoff from the power numbers he put up in Florida the previous two seasons, with 41 doubles and 29 homers in 2008 followed by 42 doubles and 16 homers in 2009. Cantu has always been known for his bat rather than his glove, but he can definitely produce at the plate.

  • Padres add Jorge Cantu :: Friar Forecast
For under a million bucks, Cantu offers enough upside to be worth the money, and he should provide good depth for the Padres. Jed Hoyer continues to patch together a very nice looking ballclub, despite the loss of its best player.

Context is everything. Back when rumors started floating around that Cantu might be the “solution” at first base, the idea didn’t thrill me. Now that he’s here as a backup, I have no problem with the signing, especially at the alleged price.

Here's his stats with the Marlins and the Rangers in 2010
