The Padres helped sponsor a camp for Marines interested in learning how to become a baseball umpire. According to one of the MLB Umpire supervisors:
Marines and umpiring are a natural fit, [Rich] Rieker said. They both demand discipline. They both require cool heads. They both rely on split-second decision-making.
I like the idea of turning human killing machines into arbiters of peace. Also, if you had Marines back there, I doubt that you'd get many people arguing calls or getting in the face of the ump. And plus, you'd get really interesting soliloquies. 3:03 is the best thing ever.
