I can't put my finger on it, but there is something not right about the Padres. I'm hoping at this point that the Pads can stay perched on top the NL West until the end of the season and then get hot for quick spurts in the playoffs.
We've seen them get hot for short periods of time since May, but they always seem to fall back to sloppy uninspired baseball just as quickly. This is how the team plays. It's late August, I don't expect them to change now. The key will be, can they get hot when it matters. The answer... maybe.
What's the reason they get hot? Who knows? It's the same players out there most days. Sure we've had our share of injuries, but the bench players are sometimes the hot players. I just don't get it. You look at the starting players in every position and they seem like they should be good. All of them are capable of playing really well. I haven't looked at his stats, but Klesko seems like he's the only one that hasn't hit for awhile. But he hasn't played much because of a combination of a bad back and getting good massages.
I can't figure it out. You never seem to know which team is going to show up for any given game. We haven't seen the late inning comebacks, incredible defense, killer instinct or Padres luck that you usually associate with a championship team.
I'm a little tired of the players on the team trying to look at all the positive things they've done. Maybe it's time to look at the negative things and then maybe try and fix them.
Sure we are in first place, but it doesn't feel like it. It feels like there is something wrong, but what it is I can't tell.
