Kevin Towers Stays, Giles rejects $21 million 3 year deal, Offy to Hoffy

UT:

San Diego's offer is "not close" to getting a deal done, Giles' agent, Joe Bick, said yesterday.

The Padres are going about this Giles thing all wrong.  Remember in Seinfeld when the lawyer Jackie Chiles is representing Kramer during his hot coffee and cigarette lawsuit.

Jackie Chiles:  You put the balm on? Who told you to put the balm on? I didn't tell you to put the balm on. Why'd you put the balm on?

Chiles keeps telling Kramer they are going to be rich.  But then the company meets with Kramer and offers him life time free coffee or a job as the Marlboro Man and Kramer agrees with out Chiles permission.

That's what the Padres need to do.  Get Giles a tanning booth for the clubhouse, some hair dye and a good looking catcher and he'll make the deal before Joe Bick can interfere.

UT:

Arizona told him yesterday he didn't get the job, said Towers, the Padres' GM since November 1995.

"I'm very happy to still be wearing blue," Towers said. "I'm a Pad."

Towers is getting squeezed out with Alderson here.  He had the run of this place before then and he doesn't like it.  He may be able to work with Alderson but Towers isn't necessarily happy in my opinion.  Towers is a decent GM though, I'm not always happy with his decisions, but people love to second guess GM's.

Alderson and Towers met with closer Trevor Hoffman yesterday and made him a contractual offer.

I'm personally not worried about Hoffman leaving.  I think they'll come to an agreement.
