USA v Cuba Open Thread Teh Strasburg Starts
I'm probably the only one here but I don't care, I'm going balls deep in this biatch. A win in this game would bring us to the Gold Medal game. Strasburg was scheduled to pitch in the game before but was pushed back to rest and because he is easily the best pitcher on the team. He just turned 20 last month. Gosh I love him so much. Let's do this! USA USA USA USA!

Dodgers Get Maddux
The LA Times is reporting that the Dodgers have aquired Greg Maddux from the Padres. There is no word yet on what the Padres will get in return. I don't see any word from any other website but since ESPN is posting it, it's probably legit. It seems Estes and Tomko are headed to Portland to make their final rehab starts so this would be the right time, I guess. I hate this move, I wanted Maddux to finish in a Padre Uniform. Unless we get something outrageous from the Dodgers, I'm going to be so pissed.

Open Thread August 17 on ESPN Phillies Padres
So lazy jbox and dex, so lazy. I don't even know why I am watching this, especially with the worst annoucers since John Madden and Al Micheals. This is a rubber game but only the Phillies care. Cha Sueng Beak is pitching agaisnt San Diego native Cole Hamles. I really don't have anything else to say. I hope this is enough words. We are already losing 1-0 2 outs in the top of the first runner on first with howard at first and burrell at the plate. Go!

Padres will NOT sign Mooneyham
Scouting Director Bill Gayton said the club will not sign 17th-round pick Brett Mooneyham, a left-handed pitcher who has a scholarship to Stanford and is seeking well above $1 million. General Manager Kevin Towers, who recently scouted the pitcher, likened Mooneyham to Padres lefty Wil Ledezma, saying he has a powerful arm but needs to refine his delivery.

So I stayed up all night watching USA Baseball....
....and I could have sworn I was watching the 2008 Padres. Oh Lord, what awful baseball from the manager, to the defense, to the pitching, to the hitting. Ok so first of all, nbcolympics is an awesome website if you are into the olympics. You can watch most of the sports live on your computer with the help of Microsoft Silverlight, aka Axion's arch enemy. I acutally like it alot. You get the ambient noise of the crowd and the crazy asians banging their sticks together and blowing whistles, but no commentator. That's where the online chat commentator comes in. It's basically like a live blog but only he can type. Last night it was some guy from rotoworld. Whatever.

KHALIL SHOWS EMOTION...PHANTOM CRIES.
Shortstop Khalil Greene almost certainly will sit out because of a hand injury suffered Thursday night when Greene – frustrated by his season-long hitting slump and the pain of hitting a ball off his shin – socked a storage chest near the dugout.
"It's not good," Greene said of his left hand, which was discolored and swollen well after the last-place team's error-filled, 7-3 loss to the first-place Diamondbacks at Petco Park.
A few Padres players said they feared that Greene fractured the hand, and Greene, who was replaced at shortstop by Luis Rodriguez in the eighth inning, said, "There's something definitely wrong" with the hand.
So. Apparently Khalil isn't a robot. At least not a robot that wouldn't injure itself.
Greene said he was fed up with another failed night at the plate. He had struck out in the seventh inning against Diamondbacks All-Star Dan Haren. In the same at-bat, Greene fouled a ball off his shin.
When he returned to the dugout, he went down the stairs to the clubhouse tunnel and dropped to a knee.
So you see Phantom? This is why people hate Khalil. Because he gives the perception that doesn't care. Maybe this will change the perception.
Greene said the eruption was due more to his frustration over failing as a hitter than the pain from the foul ball to the shin.
"I don't know how to put into words the frustration level, how difficult this year has been," Greene said, appearing haggard and spent. "For me to do that, it's certainly not commonplace."
Greene said he cares deeply about helping the team and frustration had boiled over.
I really don't know what to say. I'm quite surprised.
