Big baseball fan and fan of the (San Francisco) Giants. Currently living in New Mexico, and I hate the MLB Local blackout rules. I lose 40 games a year on my mlb.tv since the Diamondbacks and Rockies are in our division even though I could never see their games on local television or cable (I could watch the Rangers if I wanted to, but I can still get them on mlb.tv).

Prep for tonight's game

I was just trying to get ready for tonight's match up with the Royals, but they have nothing on their SB site yet either, so no trash talking until later I guess.  As I was reading up on the Royals a couple of random thoughts

1.) Luke Hochevar is the opposing pitcher tonight.  So far this year he is 0 for 3 with 3K and no walks.  His batting line tonight?  You know how the Giant's pitchers just love those AL pitchers that never hit.  I say 1 for 2 with a BB.

2.) We've stunk it up in interleage play this year.  Prior to this year we were 91-85 in interleague play.  With the way the AL has owned the NL lately, I don't feel bad about that .  We are 1-8 this year so far with 9 games left, dropping us to a a losing record of 92-93 overall.  We play the Royals, Indians and As.  Can we get that back up to .500 this year?

I have know working knowledge of the Royals except what I've gleaned in the past half an hour, I tend not to follow the AL because I actually like that pitcher's play the complete game.  Overall the Royals seem to be playing pretty decent baseball.  They have the same record as us but the feeling I get from browsing their posts is that they've played good baseball all year except for a 12 game losing streak.  Without that streak they're above .500.  This is opposed to how I feel about the Giant's where they've played pretty unremarkable baseball all year  punctuated by a couple of good weeks.

I hope tonight is the start of Cain being better than he has been.  7 IP, 2 ER, 105 pitches and the win.  Go Giants!

Jose Cruz, Jr: To hate or not to hate?

I am in Houston this week for job related training, and so I got to watch last night's game on FSN-Houston.  When Jose Cruz came up to bat the first time I booed him along with most of the fans in the stadium.  The announcers then proceeded to bash on the fans.  They pulled up the stats from the year that he played with us and the conclusion that they had was that the fans were booing him just because he used to play for us and then switched sides, they were completely clueless as to the real reason for the hate.  Granted, he hit 20 homeruns for us and won a gold glove.  After they mentioned the booing I suddenly remembered some of the great outfield assists that came from right field that year.  Then my memories were blocked again and now all I can remember is the dropped ball.

I saw some comments relative to this idea at the end of the second game day thread from yesterday about putting too much blame on his shoulders.  Should we hate him?  I like overreacting, it makes me feel good.  In my mind our gold glove right fielder cost us the championship that year because of his error.

Houston Series Preview

I was over on the Astros' SB Nation site and thought that the fanpost in preparation for the four game series with our Giants was very well written, if a little biased towards the wrong team.  You can find it here.  The poster nailed Zito spot on and even went so far as to say that if Cain is on his game tomorrow they still have a shot because our bullpen will be worn out from the Zito start tonight.  Sigh.  Go Giants!

Grant appreciation day

I was visiting the Dodger's SB Nation Gameday chat this morning and found the Dodger fans over there talking about the number of our posts (230 or so at the time) compared to theirs at the beginning of the game (15 or so, I didn't count so this is a very rough estimate).  Once response to this comparison was:

It tends to happen when they have the best writer on SBN writing for them. Shame he has that massive character flaw.

I do believe that the massive character flaw is being a fan of the Giants, which most people on this site can probably forgive him for.  Before last year started I was searching for a good Giants' blog and settled for The Splash! for about two weeks before searching again and found McCovey Chronicles.

Thanks for helping us all get through the current Giants' downturn Grant, you do a great job and it's not just recognized by us here at the Chronicles.
