Tix? & thoughts

I'm looking for 2 park pass tix to the game tomorrow 4/9.  I've searched the Padres marketplace and main ticket site, but to no avail.  Might anyone have 2 tix they want to part ways with?  I can meet you at the game, whatever is easiest for you.

Other thoughts:
I can't stop thinking about A-Go and how well he's hit this season so far.  And on top of that, he seems so comfortable with where he's at and needs to be.  He's always confident and cool in every interview I see him in, lets just hope he can hang once the pitchers start pounding him inside.  Looks like a young Raffy Palmeiro to me.  Anyone?  Anyone?

What is up with our pitching.  Crap, thats what.  And KT's job is seriously on the line if our season tanks because of our starting and middle relief pitching.  It sickens and worries me to think about losing leads because of our bullpen.

Thats it for now.  Feel free to email me if any of you have tix for the game on Sunday.

Cheers

Hey, he's got a good point..

Rob Neyer's take on the newest addition to the chip n dales clubhouse..

Maybe somebody can explain Mike Piazza and the Padres to me. At one time, Piazza was a premier hitter, both for power and average. From 1993 through 2001, Piazza batted .326 and averaged 34 home runs per season. Now, though, about all that's left is the power. So the Padres, who play in the only ballpark that's tougher on power hitters than Shea Stadium, think Piazza will help them? Just as weird: Piazza supposedly will catch 90-100 games ... even though he can't throw, and that big ballpark is well-suited to the running game? All things considered, I think I'd rather give the regular job behind the plate to Doug Mirabelli.

Philly

Tim Kurkjian's take on Phil Nevin's role with the Rangers...

"Rangers DH Phil Nevin, who makes $10M, hired a nutritionist in the offseason and reported to a winter hitting session in Texas in great shape.  The Rangers think he still has good bat speed and can return to form."

First of all, was Phil ever that good to deserve $10M a year?  He was a solid, solid player for a few years there, but it seems like the Pad's way overpayed for a one-tool player like Phil and let's be honest, when do the Padres ever overpay their players?

It's good to see Phil turning his career and attitude.  I know I'll be pulling for him this season.  The DH should do him some good even though I'm sure he'd never admit it.

Concessions Cap

Taken from the UT's online poll.  Pretty typical, but the lowering concessions prices caught my eye and made me think.  Can MLB really put a concessions cap on Nachos and Beer prices?

Don't know about you but I might not care too much about the Padres not scoring next year if my beer and nachos were, say, 10 bucks cheaper.

Poll
Now that Major League Baseball has ratified a tougher steroids policy, what would you like it to tackle next?
  • 3. Installing a salary cap
  • 4. Installing instant replay
  • 5. Unifying or abolishing the DH rule
  • 6. Making times for playoff games more fan-friendly
  • 7. Banning the tomahawk chop
  • 1. Lowering ticket prices
  • 2. Lowering concession prices

GM's are kool..

Oh to be the General Manager for your favorite team.  We can only dream:

http://www.slate.com/id/2125228/?nav=tap3

blaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh
hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhbla
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhh.

[editor's note, by Dex] In the future, if you're desperate to get around that 300 character minimum, just throw in a couple haiku. Like so:

oh to be the man
not unlike Theo Epstein
we can only dream

in new baseball cards
they now include the GMs
what have we come to?

Then include something about how if you were GM you'd order mandatory jock punches for dudes who hit into double plays and in no time, you've hit 300 characters!

K.G.O.K.?

"Meantime, the fact that Greene has sufferered three broken digits in 11 months has been a subject of discussion among the Padres. "You are concerned . . . and you're not," said Hutcheson."

"..Greene was placed on a calcium supplement when tests showed he was deficient."

How concerned ARE the Padres and what exactly does this 'concerned' mean.  Concerned with his strict diet and, quite possibly, his Bahai'i faith contributing to his calcium deficiency?  Concerned that he's too fragile?  I couldn't forsee the Padres thinking twice about losing KG, but after this morning's UT article it made me go hmmmm.  It'll be interesting to see how they handle this if year after year he breaks bones in his hands and/or feet so easily.

Any word on Eaton's return?

Peav's tonight.  Him and Rocket scheduled for next Tuesday @ Petco.  I'll be there, $5 standing room only with a bucket of nachos.

I'm just barely hanging in there with this team and next year should bring many, many changes I predict.  As for tonight?  It'll come down to our bullpen as always, remember that.  Dre's win by 1.

Playoffs??!!??!!

Its been a weird seaon huh?  Like two seasons packed in one.  An awesome start, a hoorible two month stretch, Phil, injuries, are we finally back?  I was thinking about what the Padres players will do upon the last out of the game they clinch the NL West crown.  It would seem weird for them to go bonkers if they're like six or seven games above .500 in a division where every other team is well below the even mark.  I mean, they were really bad there for a while huh?  Hopefully we're back and rolling, I personally think so.

Poll
Given what this strange Padres season has been like and upon winning this years NL West crown, do the Padres:
  • Rush the field, jump on each other, and celebrate with cheap champagne in the locker room? (i.e. We've gotta a real chance of winning in the playoffs!)
  • Sorta run, sorta fake jog out to the middle of the field and shake a few hands, give a few hugs while one or two guys go crazy for attention? (i.e. we had one heck of a start, but man we were really crappy for a while, who knows?).
  • Shake hands, pat a few guys on the back, go home (i.e. Playoffs?!!!!? - Jim Mora style)

It's time.

I'm waiting for my favorite sports scores webpage to load up expecting the padres to be up by a good margin with Peavy pitching another dominating, stopper-like game.  And to my expectation it was indeed a blowout, 0-12.  Only it was the Mets taking it to Bochy's crew yet again for a series sweep of the "first place" San Diego Padres.  Perhaps Pat O'Brien is on too something that we here in little ol San Diego don't realize?  Well then its time, regardless of what they think of us on Entertainment Tonight or the Best Damn..., time for us to really start barking.  At who you ask?  Kevin Towers for one, Bruce Bochy two, and John Moores three.  Take your pick.  If it were up to me I'd show Boch the door if the Padres continue to play this shitty for the rest of the season, no matter what extension he just signed.  He's just too mellow for this club and IF, if the Padres don't turn it around and start playing like the dominating club they SHOULD be, then he needs to go and another guy needs to come in and knock some heads around (Lou?).  I just can't blame the players all that much, except for maybe Nevin and Klesko for being such no-trade clause toads, because our bench players have stepped it up tremendously through all the injuries to key players like Eaton, Loretta, and that redneck first baseman guy.  Harsh, yes, but its time for him to get lost and the American League is calling and they want another poor-fielding DH to join the club, any club for that matter.
I just hope that the club really comes together soon and that Eaton's injury isn't as bad as I'm thinking it is.  Perhaps they will, and August will be a run up to the Playoffs with the engine going on all cylinders.  But if it isn't and we continue to limp along, then people gotta go.  No doubt 'bout it.
