Peavy supports two big cheaters
Peavy supports Clemens, Bonds:
I really hate reading this stuff. It reminds me of when Gwynn would support Bonds and McGwire. Bonds used to crack on Gwynn all the time for being fat and slow and Gwynn would always take the high road praise and Bonds. That's fine, but he would also insist that Bonds and McGwire belonged in the Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame should have no place for cheaters.
If Jake Peavy truly loves the game of baseball wouldn't he be upset with his two "buddies" who have cheapened records, disgraced the game and its storied history? What kind of friends are those? It'd be different if Bonds and Clemens told the truth and came clean, forgiveness is an admirable trait. I can't understand publicly supporting them and claiming not to care about their actions when they did irreversible damage to the relationship between the league and its fans and continue to lie about it.
Not to mention if these guys really are Peavy's friends wouldn't they consider what their performance enhancers was doing to other players stats? What about their long term health? Does Peavy care about that? What about the health of those that follow in their role models footsteps and take PEDs themselves?
Peavy your friends cheated and you want to pretend it didn't happen and don't want to know about it. Hear no evil, see no evil. Friends shouldn't blindly support each other, when deep down they know the truth. They're the ones that need role models.
"At that point, I knew we were going to win that game and he knew I was going to give him a good pitch to hit. He didn't have to guess what was coming: a fastball. He took a good shot at it and just missed it. We had a good little exchange there. We would've done that whether it had been on the field or not. But he wanted the fans to be a part of us paying our respect to each other."
Major League Baseball is about competition it's not about helping a friend of an opposing team hit a home run for the enemy crowd. I lost a lot of respect for Peavy here. That's not the right way to play the game. Bonds should appreciate competition not a cookie thrown his way. Do you think Bonds would help Peavy reach a strike out record by striking out on purpose? Not a chance in hell. Bonds and Clemens only look out for themselves. These are two friends that Peavy needs to keep his distance from because they aren't good role models for him.

a agree to a point....
If 30-40% of baseball was taking steroids then EVERYONE in baseball had a friend who was taking steroids. Don't dog on Peavy because his friends happen to be "talented" cheaters.
That being said, DUCK Bonds and Clemens.

I didn't say he should stop Bonds from using
In your example of a friend that uses illegal drugs. You don't have to disown them but you don't publicly support them blindly when you know (even though don't want to know) that they are doing something wrong.

Dude, its not like he called the press conference
"I wish there was more talk about that than there is about them. To see a buddy like Roger have to go through something like this, it's aggravating. I know he's a great person, a great individual. And he's being very good to me and my family."
Im sure for a baseball player that saw a third of the guys he played with at one point use roids, its frustrating to see two of your friends get all the blame for it.

Dude
But he did say he doesn't care about truth, so really he's saying he doesn't care if they used steroids. Maybe it doesn't bother him as it relates to their friendships but I would think it should bother him as a clean MLB player who wants fair competition.

It's just an insiders vs. outsiders mentality
Bonds and Clemens are two guys who play Jake's sport and have for a long, long time--he's not exactly going to take the side of Brian McNamee, a bunch of douchey Congressman, a silly hearing, and a whole lot of press and reporters who probably seem just as craven and self-serving and difficult as Bonds and Clemens...
Yeah, I wish Jake would keep it to himself, too--but I'm hardly shocked. Guys in baseball stick up for other players, army guys stick up for army guys, my hometown is better than your hometown, my Shiite militia is better than your Sunni insurgency. The kind of tribal love that makes the world go round!

Jake
The first is a point jbox touched on in the comments...if I'm a player that only relies on my talent and work ethic (Jake)...then I should absolutely hate a guy (Barry, Roger, etc.) that is using to get an advantage that helps him hurt me or my team. F**k that guy. Do it the clean way...do it the right way. If your best can't beat my best unless you have an illegal advantage, you're a fraud and an embarrassment to my sport.
Second point, and I've said this in one way or another since I started posting on the GLB...Jake is not the brightest bulb on the Jumbotron. He proves it time and time again. Whether it's in trying to strike everybody out, causing a stir about his contract during a critical time in the stretch run or defending a-holes like Bonds and Clemens...he constantly steps on his crank.
"Don't think; it can only hurt the ballclub."
He still has blue eyes that are like staring into an endless crystal clear pond in the middle of a beautiful desert oasis. (That was just for you PGFL44.)

It reminds me of Edmund Burke's quote
I know guys like Jake and Tony want to be stand up guys and not stir the pot, but someone needs to take a stand. I'm not asking Jake to be an anti-Bonds spokesperson, but don't support the guy either. I think the support creates an apathy over the use of steroids. After all, if by the book guys don't care, and even promote the status of steroid users, then what is the big deal about using them?
I'd like to see Jake say something to the effect like, "As much as I like and respect Barry, if he did use steroids, then he needs to suffer the consequences." You don't have to throw the guy under the bus to take issue with his actions. But you also don't need to slip Jesus' sandals on the guy either.
