Man, I'm glad the season's over

To any Diamondbacks fans who are checking to see the "Gaslamp Ball" response to last night's game, please don't comment. I don't really want you around, and the longer you stay here telling me that you're not doing anything wrong, the more I hate you and want to tear your throat out and feed it to my cats. Sure, you're friendly enough, but so was the dude on my doorstep last week trying to sell me a 5-year subscription to Oprah's magazine. I don't want O Magazine coming to my mailbox every month and I'm not in the mood for your "friendly" banter. Maybe that's just me. Maybe that's just today. But I'm honestly sick enough of some of the general negativity we get from our regular readers to have any patience for this chipper attitude from people not even invited to the party. So, hey thanks, but get away from me because you smell like the cow got into the onion patch.

In any case, we get an off day to think about what we've done. Peavy is obviously done psychologically as is the rest of the team. I don't anticipate the Padres ever winning another game this season after completely wrecking Peavy's arm and forcing our offense to own up to the fact that they're terrible. In fact, just to punish Bud Black for being such an idiot, I say we make him start the next 8 games in a row just to show you that professional athletes need exactly 96 hours of rest. There's a lot that happens in that final 24 hours. We all have seen what Keifer Sutherland can accomplish in 24 hours and robbing Jake Peavy of that was balls out the most idiotic move in the history of baseball.

The Cy Young Award is obviously going to go to Brandon Webb. Sure, when he was called on to step up and beat the Padres last week, he failed miserably, but at least he didn't volunteer to kamikaze pilot himself right into the empty spot next to the battleship like Peavy did. No honor in a face full of water and engine parts.

That being said, let's look forward to next season and what we'll be doing this offseason. Halloween's always a fun holiday and I enjoy Thanksgiving. I'm hoping for some Wii games for Christmas, but I think the new baby (any day now) will probably hog a lot of the glory in the presents department. Charger gear only please. Enough with the Padres gear. I don't root for losers.

This is a completely unnecessary rant. Why can't we question the move to pitch Jake? How does that make us lose all faith in the team and make us a bunch of bandwagon fans?

I totally love this blog and generally respect you and JBox and your opnions, but this kind of sardonic crap makes people not want to post here.

We lost a tough series, but we're still in first in the Wild Card. It sucked that our FO built up last nite and that our ace didn't deliver. We have a right to be frustrated, but I don't think any of us are claiming the season is over.

Get fired up, that's fine. But don't come down on the people who offer a lot of the different perspectives on this site. You'll just chase us away.

See
THAT rant telling us that we are all horrible fans for being frustrated and venting our negativity together so that we can get over it and move on just completely killed my mood today and made me feel like GLB is not the place that I want to be.

Getting yelled at for occassionally being melodramatic and a fanatic about a team I LOVE really sucks, Dex.

I don't think you're being fair to the people here who collectively make this blog the place we want to spend off days as well as on days.  Part of what makes this blog great is the fact that we all react differently, and usually respond kindly to each other.

After reading that, I think I'm going to take the day off from GLB.

I'm just happy to know that Dex has as much hatred and pure disdain for our new "friends" as I do. Their mere presence takes some of the fun out of our successes and makes our failures that much more unbearable.

I just don't understand why they are even hanging out in one of our open threads. I've seen the open threads over at the Snake Pit and they are pretty good. They get lots of comments and lots of activity. If it were like the Dodger thread where no one comments I could understand them coming over looking for someone to talk to.

I don't go to other teams sites and rip them because of the plain and simple fact I don't want people doing it to us. Our open threads are like a family get-together. We cheer together, laugh together and enjoy each others company...sure we have our disagreements, but we're all there for one common goal. The last two open threads have been like being at a great party that you were really looking forward to and then all of the sudden a couple of drunk assholes show up and kill the vibe.

I used to hate seeing DodgerBlueBalls show up...but I'd much rather see him show up than YoungandDumb, Rocks Phan and dodgerhater.

Too bad. It didn't have to go in this direction, or maybe it did. It's his blog, he can do whatever he wants with it. I'm fairly new, so maybe I should just keep my mouth shut, but that's not my nature. I've put in enough years of blood, sweat, and tears for this team to have earned the right to disagree with a decision here and there. Does that mean I've abandoned them? No. Does that mean I was hoping Jake would get shelled so I could say I told you so? No. I know for damn sure that I don't need to defend my loyalty to the team on this blog or anywhere else, and I'm pretty sure fans like Phantom and Drama don't either. How about we put it behind us and quit taking potshots? Questioning someone's loyalty is the surest way to get rid of them, so if that's the goal, then carry on. Otherwise, let's gear up for the next series.

by matthewverygood on Sep 6, 2007 10:41 AM PDT reply actions

I'll tell you what...
Did I want the Pads to win the last two days?  Yes.  Did I want Jake Peavy pitching last night?  No.  When Jake is on, man he's on.  But just as easily as he builds off his win, he also builds off his losses.  So why mess with one of the sure things on our team.  We all know Jake can lose it mentally.  And so what he asked for the ball.  He also asked for the ball with strained ribs during a playoff game...?  And Jake has also shown that he is succeptible to a dead arm after pitching in the WBC.  I'm sure Dex isn't abandoning the Pads, but I'm sure that if the Pads don't recover from this series, Black will be highly criticized during the offseason.

And on a side note, why don't we focus all our attention on Valverde.  That guy was celebrating like he just won the division single handedly.  Dude, you came in with a three run lead, gave up one hit and got 3 outs.  Great job, may you have the same luck as Byung-Hyun Kim if you find yourself in the offseason.

a large amount of ridicule, idk what happened last night. Prancing around, hat turned completely sideways, dancing after K's (and he even danced after getting a groundball to end it last night)- he writes the jokes for people.

by Brad @ Gaslamp Ball on Sep 6, 2007 11:06 AM PDT reply actions

Thats meant jokingly, not critically
To be honest, I agree with what (I think) Dex is getting at. Jake got beat last night. Let's not look for eight hundred different reasons, he just got beat.

Jake Peavy could come to my door and say that he wants to have sex with my girlfriend and I don't think I'd stand in his way. If he said "Hey Brad, this 5 days of rest is pussy shit that represents some really pathetic babying of overpaid professional athletes. I can pitch on 3 days" I also probably wouldn't argue with him. Bud Black made the right call, whether or not Jake got smashed.

Valverde is still a drama-queen, the Diamondbacks are still from Zonie-land and the Padres are still the most complete team in the NL West.

by Brad @ Gaslamp Ball on Sep 6, 2007 11:11 AM PDT up reply actions

I completely disagree
Jake can have sex with your girlfriend all he wants, but I think the rest of us (are you listening Papa Negro?) need to learn from what transpired last night.  If nothing else, it might mean that you think long and hard when Jake tells you that he can pitch on 3 days rest, that he can go one more inning, or that his ribs feel fine.  Someone needs to think for that boy.  I love his go-for-the-ball attitude, but I trust him about as far as I can throw him.

Yes and no
I agree that Jake thinks with his dick too much, but his performance this season has had me thinking that he started to balance his "killkillkill" attitude with a little brainpower. I had hoped that his performance this season was an indication that the "It's just a scratch, I can do it!" attitude was over.

I guess I just really don't think baseball pitchers need 5 day's rest. Hell, it seems like half of the major league pitchers go out there and get their shit handed to them after 70 pitches on 5 days rest. Maybe a few less days would help those guys?

I admittedly didn't watch the game, I just find it hard to believe that an extra 24 hours would have made a big difference to the physical state of his arm.

Now, if we want to talk about him being in the wrong state of mind, because of the media attention he got, and the pressure, and the psychological aspects - that I can all understand a bit more.

Meh - I can see it both ways now, I guess. My point is that you have to consider Black's knowledge and position when he made the choice.

If Peavy throws a no-no last night, Bud Black is a genius who really knows his pitching staff. If he gets owned, like he did, he gets criticized.

As I said, I can see it both ways, there are too many variables. I just don't think Black should take so much heat, thats all.

by Brad @ Gaslamp Ball on Sep 6, 2007 11:34 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think it was the rest
in a physical state, but more mental to him  Jake velocity was about the same, and his movement was not his best stuff, but still good.  His location and pitch selection was TERRIBLE.  There was so many times I thought, not only was that a pitch in a bad location, but why throw it in that situation?  He does the same thing in the playoffs.

Jake acts like he is the man, but in some games I don't think he believes it.  He should just go out there and think he is  the man. He should've thought "I have a nasty fastball and an awesome slurve, and I don't think you can hit it."  Instead he got beat on his non plus pitches 1-2 count, back-up slider on the inside of the plate? Curve-ball to a batter with a slider speed bat?

You
have to pay for all the possible tickets upfront.
So they charge for 3 games in the NLDS, 4 Games in the NLCS, and 3 games for the WS.  Plus the esculate the prices for each round.  The day they give you a refund is the same day your money is due for the 2008 season.  Plus we always sell our tickets for the playoffs (on the market place, which the Padres make 20% off) and by additional tickets that we use when they offer them in a "special buying period".

I know why Sandy says this team is strapped for cash, I just can't believe they signed such a shitty lease with the city for the Q, and shitty bond rate on PETCO, plus 20% of revenue, and a terrible TV deal.

dex's rant
When the Red Sox were perennially mediocre, it was pretty hard to find an annoying Red Sox fan because the real Red Sox fans were too busy sighing and waiting-till-next-year. Now that they're good every year, always a contender, every casual fan expects Theo Epstein to win on every trade, to beat the Yankees every year, and my friends who used to see the Sox as a communal experience now get lumped in with guys who irrationally expect greatness every year, and from every trade.

Ultimately, when your team begins to perform well on a regular basis, that's when the casual fans hop on board. And lately, the Padres have had a lot of bandwagoners who don't respect the gains this franchise has made in the last three years. Just turn on XX to hear what they sound like. It isn't pretty. It's enough to drive a die-hard fan like Dex a little crazy.

by metalsupplier on Sep 6, 2007 4:50 PM PDT reply actions

exactly. you couldn't get this upset in 2005...
because the Padres were sort of boring and mediocre.  And we still made the playoffs and won the division.

These losses hurt because we've seen a really great baseball team for parts of the season--and we've seen how even teams with starting pitching that good can totally implode, or how a bullpen that deep can lose a late lead, or how a hall of fame closer can fail to close.  We've seen an offense that has come damn close to being no-hit and one that plastered the ball to every corner of the field...

We're all so superstitious that no one wants to talk about the playoffs much, let alone how 'deep' we could potentially go...but it comes out in other ways.  Wasn't watching Jake labor last night extra painful because you sort of remember that he hasn't been good when we needed him the last 2 years in the playoffs? Weren't you sort of fighting back the image of that Pujols homerun in the 4th inning last year...or the drubbing the year before? I don't think I was thinking it consciously, but when I was squirming last night part of me was worried about this coming October (if we get there) and the potential for some really painful disappointment.  I submit that freaking out now is a way of preparing yourself for the kind of torture it would be to watch us go up in smoke in the playoffs.  Because we're really good.  We've put together a solid team over the last few years and it would be great to have something to show for that...

Just because we think
it's weak to have people turn on us when we've supported the team all year doesn't make us "little girls."

I never gave up on this team. I even said last nite, in the post that prompted your oh-so-clever retort of "Drama Queen" that we still have the Wild Card.

Questioning the moves the FO makes doesn't make us bandwagon fans. I've been a Padres fan since I was in my mother's womb in 1984. I've stuck through the awful, terrible, woefully bad years, and I've seen touches of greatness. However, just because I love and adore this team and want nothing more than for them to succeed means that I can't express my disappointment or displeasure.

It's these kinds of cocky, disrespectful, and intellectually offensive posts that piss me off. You want to disagree with me about Jake's start last nite, go right ahead. That's why I post on a blog, to intelligently discuss baseball. But I don't come on here to get ripped apart when the team lets me down. I've stuck through the team countless games this year, and last nite was just too much for me. Does that make me weak? Does that mean I don't really care? I don't think so. I think it means I'm human and that sometimes I need to take a step back.

The division is still ours to win. We're tied with the D'backs for losses, and we have two games to make up on them this year, which is potentially the difference in the standings right there.

I love this team and I really appreciate having a place like GLB to post. However, if I'm going to be consisently brushed aside or spoken to in a condescending manner, then it's not worth my time to post here anymore.

I'm not asking for apologies and roses, and I'm no model citizen myself. But I think it's pretty clear we all love this team. Otherwise, we really wouldn't spend our free time posting here. We choose to do so because it's what we enjoy. I hope this is the last time something like this comes up, but if I get flamed for this, so be it.

I forget which metrics he used (I'm pretty sure OPS, ISO, and maybe even win-shares), but Khalil was the best road short-stop in the game. So even though he plays 81 games at Petco where he is dramatically less effective, at least we have a beast on the road.

Think about it this way...
If I had read some of the above posts yesterday, I would have posted an angry, indignant reply as well. But a new day brings a fresh perspective. We're "bandwagon" fans, right? Instead of getting angry at that, I just think it's cool that our team has a bandwagon at all. If there is a bandwagon going around, it means there's been success. You know as well as I do that there have been times in the history of the team when talking about a Padres bandwagon would have gotten you laughed out of the room. Someone above talked about how we don't respect the gains the team has made over the last three seasons. You have to laugh at something like. Was there a bandwagon in 1984? If there was, then that's when I jumped on. How about respecting the strides the franchise has made over the last 25 seasons? I can think of one: My team, the San Diego Padres, has a recognized and acknowledged bandwagon. I think that's pretty damn awesome.

I'm not a pitching coach.
Somehow I can tell that Jake's mess was due to rest...no, don't think so.  The game is done...this WAS NOT a morale buster.

The Dbags if they had any brain, now that CY is hurt and that Jake IS STILL THE MAN.

We may have owned Webb that one night, but come on, we square off against him, and I'm worried for our guys, why because he IS GOOD...same as they should be respecting CY and JP if they see us in the post season.

Yesterday's last two wins are not some mythical turning point in the universe.

Pads will crush the ball in CO, the offense is still hot, and we're 1 game behind folks.

Besides, Chargers are just around the corner.

BTW, I sometimes take Dex's sarcasm the wrong way, but for some reason, this rant made sense to me.  As someone pointed earlier, sarcasm is very hard to convey on the internet.
