Brett Tomko is a Padre

Whenever Towers makes a move now that looks completely ridiculous, I kinda look at it and think, OK. If you say so. I figure that his attempts to improve our offense cost us next to nothing and have resulted in a backup catcher, a backup infielder and a team MVP. However, this move seemed especially weird.

[cue Me putting on Nancy Drew, Girl Detective Hat]

Speaking as Nancy Drew, Girl Detective for a minute: Picking up Brett Tomko at this point solidifies my suspicions that Clay Hensley has slept with Kevin Towers' wife and will never see a big league uniform again while KT has anything to say about it. The moral of the story is, don't sleep with the boss's wife unless you're the boss or unless you're a snuglly-wuggly widdle teddy beow.

what I like
is that we DFA'd Boomer, who was signed by the dodgers, which meant that Tomko got released.

Now Tomko gets signed to, essentially, replace the person who replaced him.

by pjbno4 on Sep 4, 2007 1:25 PM PDT   0 recs

yeah, but...
I forgot to mention in my post that it's silly to think of this as a trade of Tomko for Boomer Wells. That kind of thinking gets you into trouble because A. It's not true and B. It's not true.

It's one thing to rip away the context of a situation to point out a funny coincidence, but I think way too many people are willing to look at this and say, "What kind of person would trade David Wells for Brett Tomko?"

You didn't do that, pbjn04, but I think others are tempted to.

by Dex on Sep 4, 2007 1:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

certainly not saying we traded one for another
but it seems fairly clear that one move begot the other.

Hey?
Did we just trade Tomko for David Wells?

thats exactly what we did
but it isnt a bad idea. Tomko could be a serviceable starter if we were in a pinch.

*** THIS ALSO IMPLIES that Jake will be going Wednesday on 3 days rest!!!!

by RBS on Sep 4, 2007 2:32 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Curious
How does this imply Jake will start on Wednesday?

by Drama on Sep 4, 2007 3:00 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

pushing Jake to Wednesday
i dont really know...I'm just hoping Jake throws Wednesday.

Seriously, biggest game of the year, why wouldnt you throw your best pitcher?

by RBS on Sep 4, 2007 3:53 PM PDT to parent up   0 recs

JAKE STARTS WEDNESDAY
just heard it on the radio, so it must be true.  Damn, I wanted to see 1)Cassell 2)Tomko 3)the bullpen - pitch...just for shits and giggles.

I've said it before and I'll say it again-
I don't argue with KT. No matter how ridiculous a move might seem, he has made me look like an ass every time I've questioned him. And as we all know, Ol' Third Giles doesn't need any help making himself look like an ass.

Not only did Hensley sleep with her...
...but after KT caught them in the act...in Clay's desperate flee to escape, he ran over "Colletti", KT's labrador. Very sad story.

by Drama on Sep 4, 2007 1:36 PM PDT   0 recs

OK
Now THIS is my laugh of the day. Coletti - HAHAHAHA!!

Tomko
Tomko's career against the D-Backs: 7-6 with a 3.34 ERA.

He's faced them three times this season. Twice as a reliever...once as a starter.

As a starter:

4/17 @ AZ - 5.0 innings, 8 hits, 2 ER, 4 BB

As a reliever:

4/30 vs. AZ - 0.2 innings, 3 hits, 2 ER, 2 BB
6/28 @ AZ - 2.1 innings, 5 hits, 2 ER, 1 BB

Towers
The Padres tried to acquire Blue Jays right-hander Josh Towers in a trade before last Friday's deadline for setting postseason rosters, but the deal never came to fruition

Tomko
We're all kind of talking about him as a back end rotation guy - but is it possible that KT brought him in as simply a mop up arm?  With 26 games left to go, we're gonna be on the wrong end of a game or two where it's over by the middle innings - not fun to think about, but more than likely, we're gonna see it.  Instead of burning a guy we need, maybe Tomko is the guy that goes out there because we don't need him.  He's exactly the guy I'd wanna see out there in a double digit game at Coors - not Cameron or Hampson.

On a related note...
Pete LaForest is now a Phillie.

I kinda liked that guy...damn waivers!

We could have really used his bat off the bench I believe.

by pasadenapadre on Sep 4, 2007 2:17 PM PDT   0 recs

I liked the guy too.
Liked- past tense. No time for tears; Pete LaForest is dead to me!

As many others have said
When Tomko was scheduled to start or was warming up in the bullpen - I felt all warm and fuzzy inside because I knew the Padres were about to score some runs.

I now Towers is a genius...clearly he has some limits because he 'tested' Hillenbrand and then passed on him. Clearly he saw something more positive in Tomko, right? Sigh...I just don't know about this one.

KT knows something, and I saw it.
KT was in the parking lot after the Dodger game when a stray baseball rolled up to Tomko as he was carrying his bag onto the teambus.  Tomko saw a man waiving to him to throw the ball, he was about 200 FT away.  Brett not wanting to put his bag down, reached down with his left hand, and with out shifting his feet, rotated from the hips and threw the ball left handed.  The ball arrived with so much velocity, that once the man "caught it", he immeditely was de-cleated 25 feet and smoke raised from his glove.

Amazed KT went up to Tomko and ask about this amazing throw.  Brett said "Yeah I am left-handed, but in little-league I threw so hard that the coach made me pitch right-handed so the other players could catch me, and that is how I have pitched ever since.  Every year I ask if I can pitch left-handed and each time they just laugh."

KT isn't perfect...
We all know about his awesome trades for Gonzalez, Bradley, Bard/Meredith, etc. but he has had a few rough spots. Let us not forget his fruitless acquisition of guys like Darrell May, Danys Reyes, Tim Redding (shudder), Dewon Brazelton, Paul Quantrill, and others.

I'm not saying he's a bad GM, but let's not assume that he's always going to be right.

by JollyWaffle on Sep 4, 2007 4:37 PM PDT   0 recs

I wouldn't call the trades you listed rough spots
Those trades were trash for trash.
Darrel May for Dennis Tankersly and TLong.
Tim Redding for Humberto Quintero
Dewon Brazelton for Sean Burroughs
Pual Quantrill for Tim Redding and Darrel May
and Reyes was signed as a free agent.

also, this is exactly what billy beane does
there was an article about this on hardball times.  basically, you acquire a bunch of guys who might have 'something' and who you can get cheap or for nothing, you test them out, if they don't work (hillenbrand) you cut them, but if they do work (milton bradley, jack cust etc.) then you've boosted your team without giving up much.  and it's a lot cheaper than trying to outbid the red sox, yankees (or, in our division, the dodgers and giants) for big name free agents who also have the potential to go bust.

i like the theory that tomko is going to be our Professional Innings Eater down the stretch. that makes sense.

what has happened from July 31
to now regarding hensley?  KT wasn't willing to trade him for Lamb.  His starts haven't been great, but haven't been god awful.  So you're saying that he slept with Mrs. T sometime in August?  I'm just trying to put this all together.

Seriously though, about a month ago it seemed like they had faith in Hensley.  I don't think he's down any worse or any better since the trade deadline.  Now it's like Clay who?
