Smells Like Padres in Here - Turn Into The Skid - Day 2 - Edition

Two in a row???  Big deal.  In the words of the immortal motivational speaker Matt Foley - WHOOP-DEE-FREAKIN-DOO.  You know who else has won two in a row?  EVERY OTHER TEAM IN BASEBALL AT SOME POINT THIS SEASON.  Anyone can do it, it's that easy.  Sorry, Padres, but you can't fool me.  Can't pull the wool over my eyes.  No chance.  You were flat out lucky to beat Pat Mischa Barton last night.  You don't beat Pat Mischa Barton without some sort of crazy luck.  So go ahead and go to Milwaukee.  Finish up your little schedule.  We all know the season is over.

Bobby Meacham may be the nicest guy in baseball.

Oops.

The Cubs are confident.

Worst commercial ever?

I pretty much hate all things Boston, but this SI piece on Papelbon is pretty good.  Check out the second page of the article - it's easy to see why Curt Schilling is the worst teammate in the history of teammates.  (By the way - in the print edition, they've got a bunch of b&w photos of players on teams that are headed to the postseason.  There is a photo of Brandon Webb.  No photos of any Padres.  Even SI knows it's over for us.)

Jack Cassel vs. Yovani Gallardo tonight.  Cassel is a rookie and a Dodger fan and Gallardo is 9-4 and will probably win the Cy Young.  We don't have a prayer.  I will probably just watch Gossip Girl again because it was so good last night.  Game time is 5:05pm PST.

That's awesome
Schilling basically called his own teammate stupid. But then I forget, stupid=anyone who isn't Curt Schilling.

Doesn't Az finish the season in colorado?
Does this create the possibility, however slight, that Arizona doesn't make the postseason?

Not that we'll make it, of course, I share your pessimism. It'll be colorado and the two teams from the east.

by pjbno4 on Sep 27, 2007 7:47 AM PDT   0 recs

I think it is a possibility
I just wish we factored into the mix.

by Winfield's Ghost on Sep 27, 2007 8:09 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Are you joking?
How could we not factor more in the mix? By being the current wild-card leader AND by being ahead of Colorado (who I've decided is playoff-bound), we get to play the anti-spoiler by losing the remainder of our games.

by pjbno4 on Sep 27, 2007 8:11 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

No
We're completely out it.  Our season is over.  Not even sure why we're playing the last four games.

by Winfield's Ghost on Sep 27, 2007 8:15 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh wait
Losing the remainder of our games.  I missed that.  I guess we do factor in.  My mistake.  Your insight is greater than mine.

by Winfield's Ghost on Sep 27, 2007 8:16 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

final question...
I debated this while writing the last post:

Is it more correct to think of ourselves as the anti-spoiler, or the bizarro-spoiler?

by pjbno4 on Sep 27, 2007 8:34 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Excellent question
I think I'd go with anti-spoiler - because anti signifies more negativity and pessimism to me and since our season is over, I am filled with negativity and pessimism.

Friendly reminder....
D-Backs vs. Pirates starts at 9:35am on the west coast. Brandon Webb vs. John Wesley Van Benschoten.

I know what you're thinking..."John Wesley Van Benschoten?? He has no shot."

Oh yeah? Well he was born in San Diego!

Go Pirates!!  AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!

Webb - 9.0 IP, 0 H, 0 BB, 27 K

by pjbno4 on Sep 27, 2007 8:33 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

But wasn't Peavy's against the Dodgers?
The Dodgers suck. Webb would do it against the awesome Pirates...that would be way better.

BTW - If Webb throws a no-no today...he gets the CY Young easy.

by Drama on Sep 27, 2007 8:37 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't see how
he beats out Gallardo for the CY.  I really don't.

You're not thinking my friend. Webb wins it becuase of the simple fact that Gallardo and John Wesley Van Benschoten will split the vote.

Maybe
But I would expect Ben Sheets, Dave Bush and Jeff Suppan to be contenders as well.

Cy Young
How can you leave Adam Eaton's name out of the mix is beyond me.

by Drama on Sep 27, 2007 8:48 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Actually
He's already pitched three games this year with that exact stat line.  He just asked that the reporters, television crews, and opposing team fudged the statistics so as make it appear that the games were more competitive.  He doesn't want to hog the glory.

For instance, in the June 27th game against the Dodgers (which was the second of the three 27-strikeout perfect games), three of Luis Gonzalez's actual at bats, all three-pitch strikeouts in reality, were replaced by identical footage of his World Series-winning bloop single, in which he wore a Diamondbacks uniform and batted against the Yankees.  No one noticed.

Brandon Webb's at bats in that game, in which he knocked a straightaway grand slam in the process of hitting for the cycle, were all replaced with footage of Matt Williams striking out in a Giants uniform.  Again, no one noticed.

I jumping out of my skin today.
This is the craziest playoff race ever. One way or another, we're all gonna be doing some heavy boozin' come Sunday night.

There are FOUR games left....and we could end up as NL West Champions with the best record in the National League...or wildcard champions...or completely OUT of the playoffs altogether. THAT is insane.

Jake pitching last night
was anyone else surprised to see Jake sent out to pitch the 7th last night? I know he had a low pitch count, but i was hoping he would have been done after 5 innings considering the lead we had.

Jake has to throw Sunday on 3 days rest, and I'm thinking he would be better served had he thrown only 5 or 6 innings instead of 7.

Any don't give me the Cy Young argument, thats stupid. Winning every game is more important than an award.

by RBS on Sep 27, 2007 10:53 AM PDT   0 recs

Absolutely
There was a good amount of discontent with Buddy's decision to leave him in on the open thread last night.

Buddy may have Jake slotted for a play-in game (if the need arises) on Monday? But I agree, if he needs to pitch on Sunday, a dumb moveto keep him in as long as Buddy did.

The Cy Young argument is irrelevant because he basically has the award locked up anyways, and if he left after 5 last night, he still would have recieved his 19th win.

And to think, I am now a college student.

by JBro12 on Sep 27, 2007 10:59 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

i missed the open thread last night
but i was a little ticked at Buddy. 5 was sufficient, 6 was not a big deal, but 7 was unnecessary. We had the game locked up and Jake would have gotten the win after 5, when he had thrown something like 68 pitches, instead he threw 95 pitches in 7. Still a low total for Jake, but we saw how he didn't get it done on 3 days rest against AZ earlier this month. Throwing fewer pitches increases the probability that he pitches well on Sunday

by RBS on Sep 27, 2007 11:06 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The prevailing theory
that I heard was Buddy realized with Cassel on the hill today, we might need a well-rested bullpen. As it turns out, our best men from the bully didn't see much time over this series (Bell never threw and to the best of my knowledge, neither did Meredith).

Also, Jake pretty much said after the post-game show that he was't going balls deep, so I'm not worried about him having to throw on Sunday. That said, I hope we can put ourselves in a position where it's not necessary, but we'll see how that all pans out.

by Phantom on Sep 27, 2007 11:10 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Agreed
Heat hasn't pitched since last Friday when he threw 2 innings. Cla has pitched ONCE in the past five games, going 2 innings against the Giants on Monday night. Broke has pitched ONCE in the past five games as well, going two-thrids of an inning in Tuesday's win. The bullpen is plenty rested for the Brewers series.

Pitching Jake in the sixth last night was a poor decision...pitching him in the seventh was just stupid. Ledezma and Germano could have taken 2 innings a piece last night with no problem. We had an 8-2 lead after five.

by Drama on Sep 27, 2007 11:33 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Oh God don't get me started
Black had a chance to get him out with less than 80 pitches thrown. And I say F a play-in game. We will need to win on Sunday to even have the privilege of worrying about a play-in game. Get us into the argument, then worry about who you'll pitch in game 163. I really hope this doesn't come back to bite us. Jake was clearly gassed the last time he pitched on three days rest.

I think this is overblown
its like a marathon runner who averages 5:20 miles for 26 miles.

What's the deal if he run 8 miles or 10 miles at a 7 minute pace.  Neither one really strains him that much.

I need to find the baseball prospectus article that showed that high pressure pitches and high pitch count innings have a lot more drammatic effect on a pitchers next start than total pitch count.

by Sammy G on Sep 27, 2007 11:20 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

Plus
I should add a win yesterday counts the same as a win on sunday.  Taking him out after 5 is ridiculous, still a lot of baseball to be play. You could argue he should been taken out after 6, but then a lot of people remember game 6 of the '86 world series when Clemens was taken out because the game was locked up.

by Sammy G on Sep 27, 2007 11:22 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

are you nuts?
game 6 in 86? Clemens threw 7 innings, and in that 7innings threw 134 pitches. when he left the game, boston had a 1 run lead. ZERO similarities to yesterday.

after 5 innings, we had a 6 run lead, Jake should have been pulled after 5.

the Cassel argument is a good one, but 95 pitches is still too many in that situation, when Jake didn't have to throw 95 to win.

by RBS on Sep 27, 2007 11:31 AM PDT to parent up   0 recs

The win yesterday was never
really in jeopardy after we went up 9-2. Our bullpen has blown leads this year, but a 7 run lead against the Giants? Come on. It's hardly ridiculous to think that lead was safe given our bullpen and our opponent. Getting Jake out of there as early as possible can only help for Sunday, even if other factors go into how much he is actually fatigued.

About Jake and the Cy Young
My post last night about Jake needing a CG to ice the Cy Young was completely tongue-in-cheek, though apparently I did not come off as sarcastically as I had planned. Keeping Jake in past the fifth was ludicrous, and unless Webb does hurl a no-hitter in his last game, Jake has the Cy locked up.

by Judge19 on Sep 27, 2007 11:59 AM PDT   0 recs

100% Disagree
you could make an argument for the 7th inning, but Jake has to pitch the 6th.  Saving him his not going to have any impact to his next start being 4 or 5 days from them.  He still warmed up, got the blood flowing, but he never got to the point of being fatigue.  And for those who do physical training, you don't really have any affect on the body until it gets to the point of being fatigued. If you normally do 50 pushups every morning, and you wouldn't know the difference between 20-30 pushups.  You still wouldn't feel strained. And its not a pure rep count either, there is a big differnece between doing 50 pushups in 3 minutes versus spreading them out over the day.  The 3-minutes is tougher because you fatigue the muscles more, which not only builds them, but the leads to strain on the ligaments and tendons.

Everyone is also forgeting of what happens if we bring in Cameron in the 6th and he struggles, do you pull him right away? what if he give up 2 runs? You have 3 more innings of using relieves if they struggle, next thing you know, we used 5 relievers and have a close game. 9-2 can turn into 9-6 real quick (well, assuming its not the giants).

Did Some Research on Pitch Count
You need a Baseball Prospectus Subscription, but the concept is PAP^3.  While the effects changes depending on the type of pitcher; which are categorized into two type High Endurance Pitcher and Low Endurance Pitcher.  Jake Peavy is a High Endurance Pitcher, Maddog is a Low Endurance Pitcher (duh).

So the CHI^2 analaysis shows that there is almost no differnece on pitches 70 and 90 on the pitcher effectivness in the next start, and very little differnce between 90 and 100.  What does have a bigger impact is the number of stressfull pitches.  Being that 40 seems to be the inflection point.  A stressfull pitch is defined by the runners is scoring postion with less than two outs, and any pitch above 25 in a single inning.

The thing that is amazing is how little effect pitch count has until you get to 120 pitches and/or 55 stressful pitches.  To have that tight of a correlation, something must be going on in the human body.

I would bet that Alderson and Deposdata (some of his work is cited in the articles) knows all this, I just wonder if they told Buddy what to do.

-and yes I ran a marathon, it was awful, I hate running, but I wouldn't describe myself as a "marathon runner"

But from a drinking standpoint, this would be like the difference of me drinking 4 or 6 beers.  Its not really going to change what I do the next day.  But the difference between 6 and 10 beers is huge for me.

The only reason I'd ever run that far again would be if someone was chasing me with a really big knife and I still might just stop and let them stab me because it would hurt less than running 26 again.

I actually met
one of those "Ultra Marathoner". He was training for the ultra marathon in Death Valley.  He started to do it because he would run 6-8 miles to a marathon, run the marthon, then run another 6-8 miles. He said he would do a 26-mile run 4-6 times a month when he was training.  When you meet people like that, suddenly suicide bombers don't seem that strange.

Since the beginning of last season, so I figure I might as well sign up...I did enjoy reading all of yur comments in a dark room late at night with a trenchcoat on though...

I love the optimism of this group! Come on guys we have a Magic Number now...even ESPN says so...so that's something positive we can hold on to....sure Prince Fielder might get hungry and eat Khalil while rounding second base after his 3rd HR....but we still have a magic number to shoot for!

I really hate how that Brewer mascot has to go down that slide after EVERY brewer HR. They have hit at least 600 this season, you know he has to be sick of it too.

And to all of you that still live in SD or have high speed internet and can watch the games, I envy you. I have to wait for baseball tonight to see what happened and hear John Kruk yell about nothing.

It's ridiculous how Webb won the cy young with 17 w's last season. He is just a B-Law wanna be after all...PV is the only logical pick, he has learned how to be a pitcher this season, not just a thrower.

Is this too long of a comment? I'm a little nervous. I just want to be accepted by this dysfunctional family!
